I was bought an Aspire Athlon 64 Duo Core 5520-5551. I wont get into all the specs yet. This was a gift and not my choice. I like Intel and Centrino. Never the less I was bought this as a backup because of great specs/price PC if something goes wrong with my primary.I also needed a nice 15.4.
I know some things about AMD's but this would not be my choice. I could NOT by a 4th Dell in my life again. The person did know that was out.
I did a search trying to find the difference between Athlon/Turion and was only sent to purchase Turions,Athlons and other AMD's everywhere.
1) I am hoping someone can tell me the difference between Athlon & Turion and which is better??
2) Next question I might as well add. This is tough to explain. As I go over words, icons in the desktop/taskbar,etc... and most pages with my scrollpad or mouse ,everything is washed out. The graphics/ Pictures are incredibly sharp and stunning. The Graphics/Video card is that 7000m. Not my choice either. I have this odd issue and Acer would not help me with why all words are washed out as I hover over everything. It's not even worth keeping for the small price tag. It seems like there should be a way to turn off the same look in squares around the desktop icons. (First Windows Vista) I'm trying to talk myself into it. I have spent 2 weeks searching every option that might fix this. It might be because it's cheap or one setting.
3) Websites like this one (Rare) is so crystal clear but others are terrible also. The writing "Only".
3 questions maybe....
Any help??
Thank you in Advance,

I saw this here so it was easy to copy.
I have all of this and more.
It seems I am seeing the same model everything exact except one is Athlon and one in Turion.
This is the OTHER model I wonder if I switched to/same price-same everything wherever I look.

I keep thinking it will fix the display /washed out issue and maybe be better.
I can't find the difference.
Please off any help?
tinydancer -
Not sure exactly what you're saying, but CPU guide below.
-
The Turion is the higher model, what is different, I don't know (cache maybe?)
-
If that's the question, then Turions have twice the cache (not much difference) and are slightly more energy efficient.
-
Thank You Both
I figured the Turion might be the answer to my real problem.
This is my 6th time I wrote this and went to submit and was logged off.
I can't get my question posted.
I screwed up and I need help with the shadows and why everything I hover over is washed out.
I may need to open a new topic if this even goes on.
I don't understand.
PLEASE look at my question about what to do with the washed out words like the time and date or any words over icons. The shadows over all icons are the same washed out look I get.
I'm hurrying to see if this post.I am sorry I can't write this fully.Look at my question.
I don't think this for the 7th time will post now.
I can't believe this .
I know someone here can help.
I like it here but can't post.
Tinydancer -
It posted. 7th time.
I asked about the Turion and etc... because this is my 1st Windows vista and isn't the Clear thing (shadow around all icons & the writing when you go over them) part of Windows Vista? It's around every Icon in the taskbar /desktop,etc.. I can live with it as a shadow but I "cannot" see the same exact washed out look to read anything at all and that's what I have & why I wondered if the processor /graphic card "8000 series" would be a fix to this? Acer wont help and said return. 2 weeks I've had it and up to 17 hrs daily I search for one option to change this so I can read. If I cannot read and it's so washed out as if a display was burning out like a very old laptop I have, it's no good. I'm new to Vista and this crystal clear thing is a part of it isn't it?
** I did post this question in my post but wrong subject line on my part. I really feel this is a Vista thing. It has to be. So getting another one is going to cause me the same issues with any notebook unless their tech will help. Acer wont help.
You must at least on this board for an Acer have shadows around your icons. They don't bother me. It's trying to read. It's washed out.
There has to be so many of you that know what I'm speaking of.
Please help and I will be so grateful and happy finally. 2 weeks every day 15-17 hrs searching and playing with the display following every little thing I can find which is nothing. Is it the native resolution and on DPI 96. YES!! I cannot find any other options to try but haven't stopped looking up until I posted tonight.
There's a wealth of information here and people. I know someone can help me. I also must say almost all of you have to have this if it's my model at the very least. I will add i saw one other one and it was exasctly the same but different model munber.

Just for the record the main differences between a Athlon and Turion processor are not only power consumption and cache but also virtualization. The mobile athlon x2(TK series) does not have virtualization technology while all turion x2(TL series) have it.

AMD virtualization (AMD-V)
AMD's virtualization extensions to the 64-bit x86 architecture is named AMD Virtualization, abbreviated AMD-V. It is still referred to as "Pacifica", the AMD internal project code name.
AMD-V is present in AMD Athlon 64 with stepping "F" and "G", Athlon 64 X2 with stepping "F" and "G", Turion 64 X2, Opteron, Phenom, and all newer processors.[citation needed] On Linux, AMD processors supporting virtualization have a svm flag in the special file /proc/cpuinfo.
AMD has published a specification for a technology named IO Memory Management Unit (IOMMU) to AMD-V. This provides a way of configuring interrupt delivery to individual virtual machines and an IO memory translation unit for preventing a virtual machine from using DMA to break isolation. The IOMMU also plays an important role in advanced operating systems (absent virtualization) and the AMD Torrenza architecture.

Guys,
I will leave this thread to people who want to discuss this but it would be helpful and deeply appreciated if I can possibly get some help at my other post.
If I could,I would erase all of this because my question was stated wrong for me.
I personally do know the difference . I was trying ask if the Turion would possibly fix the display issue (?) I have.
I guess I started a topic you all enjoy. I do know people love talking about the power of the AMD and gaming also ,etc...
I'm glad this is offering a discussion thread for people. I am aware of the difference. I wondered if the Turion would help me out with my problem. That's is why I asked about the difference and most of the Turions w/the same specs have a better Graphics card in my opinion. Not one person answered or helped

tinydancer I am not entirely sure what your problem could be based on what you described. Are you saying that the colors on your screen appear to be washed out? -
Evolution,
I don't know how to describe this any other way. I am almost positive since it's my 1st Vista that all it's a setting. I can't get help from Acer-they don't do tech issues LOL!!
I've got one more work or less that it should go back. Plus Ive found better.
Ive been playing with the display still and I feel it's the display and NOT broken.
No ,the colors are not washed out!!!
If you go over every icon on the desktop, taskbar, any icons-you will see a clear shadow almost around all of them.
That I can live with -but that is what the "Words" look like (washed out -barely visible) o,say you go over the clock to see the date and time. I can go over the taskbar desktop, switch bwtween windows, anything at all . It looks like the same washed out look as the big squares, little squares around all the icons on the desktop or anywhere on the computer....
I cannot barely see it. Not due to my vision . I don't know how to explain it.
I asked about the difference because I thought maybe with Vista and the 64 x2 and changing to Turion/different video card it would fix the problem. I knew that was absurd.
I worded the subject wrong but I know you guys like the topic so it didn't go to waste.
I have come very close to making these words darker but it's playing around with every little feature.
Right now it's on Windows Aero. If I just take that off and change that to say Windows Classic for example,it starts to help.
I'm playing with saturation and all settings. Making sure to remember and putting them right back because I may end up with no display.
I'm 100% postive this is something that just needs to be changed.
First Vista and isn't the idea the clear (Transparency) something? You can turn off the "Enable Transparency " and that makes some things not see through.
This is only the 2nd Vista computer I've seen briefly the first one and it had the same thing.
I know you all must have this or almost all of you when you received it. I'm that positive it's background settings that can be changed . I have no other way to write this or explain.
I opened the second thread but I don't get the replies here so I never saw your post. I'm very sorry.
I also figured no one was answering and I know so many of you have this same thing that I gave up asking.
Maybe I explained it better? I can live with the almost transparent shadows around large and tiny icons but I should be able to remove that also. I've been playing for 2 weeks and took a break the past couple of days .I can't stand it and no help anywhere. Once I start and I started tonight it's hours and hrs..
I'll check the other thread but I doubt anyone replied because I think this is Vista. Also I can't seem to explain it any different.
You don't want a computer you can't read.
Agin, the co,lors are not washed on on the desktop. Around the icons everywhere and anywhere.
I just went to start and I click on it, start search is half visible.
What I explained is the main problem. Although everything I go over just almost is barely a shadow.
It's been a 2/3 days I have been off it but on pages there are issues also.
Well my mouse pad is stuck, wont move or budge and now lost my connection.
I was looking at webpages for other examples.
The words need to be darker all over the desktop, taskbar.
In the address and search bar they are almost faded but when you go over those ,they get darker (already faded out -it's not greyed but almost that kind of look)
Any help of course is appreciated and needed .
I give up after this because I know this is an easy answer but I can't explain it. It's everywhere but the entire desktop and taskbars are the worst.
It's not on a website. It would be the toolbars aboveor underneath. Search and address are faded this way but when you go over them they get dark.
I just tried the first DVD in this computer. Forget that!! Awful. Sound and picture. Out of desperation only.
Someone really added and built up the same model on this forum .I think the same model and I was impressed. I forgot what you call it. The CPU and benchmarks ? I know where they are. But he got his up so high . Nothing to do with my issue and it is a backup computer that will get allot of use.
If I can't fix this it goes back. I know you all have this or most of you .I can't find the right words.
Help !!

P.S I wrote this? I don't know how to cut it down now. -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3084629#post3084629
Here's a very close (almost exact) example to what I mean by washed out and mine is worse than this.
It's not showing the mouse hovering over anything but the entire bottom task bar is like the shadow around all iccons and then if I go over one to see the time, desktop,IE,Switch users,etc...
It's even lighter.
Now this user has the Transparency on and I do too because removing it does nothing worth while.
It's the "WORDS" that looks like the shadows around all icons, and everything I wrote ,then when hovering over it gets super lighter...
Trying to keep this short.
