I'm struggling still on which laptop to buy, and am leaning toward the Asus w2, but I don't necessarily need the 17" screen.

The laptop will basically be a DTR.

What are the marks against the new Ferrari?

    > heat?
    > screen?
    > noise?

The differences are that the 4005 has a faster CPU (2GHz vs 1.6GHz), it double the ram (2x512MB vs 2x256MB), also has a larger harddrive (100GB vs 80GB) with a higher resolution screen (WSXGA+ vs WXGA), but the 4005 doesn't have glossy screen.

There is quite a difference in price too, about $300 CDN here, so I'll say $250USD difference?

Are you comparing the 4005 and 4002? Its about a AU$1000 (~$3999 vs ~$2999) cheaper in Australia which is a huge price difference for the slightly lower specs. I might have considered 4002 if it came out earlier. The glossy screen is a killer i think, its just too reflective.

well, i was actually wondering what some of the drawbacks were to the 4005 or the 4002. Basically, why would I *not* buy the Ferrari? what are the common complaints or cons on the 4005?

Some people are sensitive to fan noice and complains they can hear the airflow from the fans on the Ferrari 4005WLMi. Personaly, I'm just smiling when I read that. I'm pretty much set on getting this notebook next week. I'm just happy they have a propper cooling system to let the notebook run cool and stable while gaming. The airconditioning and other constant noices in my house drowns out any tiny little fan noices by far anyway! LOL! Talk about nit-picking.

Now, don't yell at me for being a critic, but I skipped the Ferrari 4000 for a few reasons:
    1. The price is very steep, and you can get a similar notebook with higher specs for the same price.

    2. Unless you are a car fanatic, I do not see any real reason to pay a high overhead to get a Ferrari-badged computer

    3. The battery life is not great for a thin-and-light laptop at 3 hours, I would would expect 4 for something with an 8-cell battery and a mobile processor

    4. With the exception of the sides, the notebook is all black, and I think it needs more color varitation to make an impression.

    5. For that amount of money, you can get a Dell XPS Gen2 (using the dell coupons of coupons of course)

Sorry for being a critic, but I am just answering the thread topic :p

You can't get any other notebook with a 2.0 GHz Turion, which is exclusive and top of the line.

You have a point, but this computer really is worth its price even without the Ferrari bit. A Dell XPS2 with all the ram, XP Pro, etc. could easily cost 300 USD more.

    Valid point.

Too much color variation (as is present in the Ferrari 3400) looks cheesy and is a dead target for theft.

True, but that XPS2 comes stock with half the RAM, no XP Pro, and a smaller HD, among other things.

I think the Ferrari 4005WLMi is designed to be the best and fastest (gaming) portable ~6lbs notebook. Sure you can buy cheap DTRs with 17" screen GeForce 6800 Go etc. But they are around 10lbs and battery life will suffer too. It all depends on how you are going to use the notebook!

BTW the ferrari gets 3h 42min according to PCMag review. It can also have modular bay second battery at times you need. It just happens to be the fastest ~6lbs notebook right now and the best 64-bit choice aswell by far.

Yes it cost just over $2000. But sometimes if you don't want to compromize and know what you want, the price is worth it to make the best choice. Sometimes getting the right product makes you happier than saving a fiew 100s. If you have enough you will get one of the best, fastest and most feature complete 6lbs notebooks there is, that's all I'm trying to say...! :acer:

This system costs $2250 cdn, thats at least 300 less than the 8104. Their performance are very similar except the ferrari is a bit better at 3D games (FPS) due to faster clocked GPU and the 8104 has faster ram. Due to the difference in price and the better build (IMO) the Ferrari has a pretty good performabce to price ratio

Where did you find it for 2250? The best price I've found is 2299.

    hello guys,

    Thanks,
    Leoboy

Yeah it has the nice glossy screen. IMO movies look better when viewed on these types of LCD screens.

    The 4002 is DDR only.

The 6600 and X700 are pretty close in terms of performance.
