What's this strange sound effect from my laptop?

Every now and then I hear a sound like a photo snapshot being taken coming from my 5680. I also feel something moving in the laptop from the CD drive when my hand is resting on the keyboard, although there is no disc inserted.

Is it my system restore setting? I created one manually but didn't here it.

Funny thing is that I recently did a clean install of Vista and I'm hearing it now and also did with XP before the upgrade.

How can I isolate the program that's causing this?

I'm posting this here because I've never heard it on any other computer I use.

    thanks...

If its a click sound, like a camera snapping a picture as you described, then its perfectly normal. It's Windows Explorer's way of telling you its done something. Clicking a link or closing Internet Explorer will also give you the same sound. You've probably never heard it before because the sound is barely audible, unless of course your system sound level was on way up. Any amount of background noise will usually drown it out.

The movement could be any number of things from the fan to the hard drive spinning. I don't think you should be overly concerned unless something stops functioning.

Try muting/putting your volume all the way to the lowest setting. Do you still hear the sound? The thing you feel is probably not the DVD-ROM (or whatever, CD-ROM?), it's probably the harddrive spinning. If you feel this may be something very annoying, try calling up Acer tech support? I heard they're not that good, but you can always try.

my old acer, 'clicked', and all it was, was the hdd spinning up,

If the system is functioning normally don't worry about it.

limeeater is right about support, it's not very good at all.

It's not the noise you get from Windows when you have a search window open (although maybe hidden) on the screen?

    Thanks guys...

I'll crank up the volume & see if I hear it while trying some of these things out.

Like I said, its literally like that sound a camera makes when taking a picture and unless my mind is playing tricks on me I do feel something moving internally at the right front end. Will check tonight if that's where the HDD is.

Going to Acer tech service is the last resort. I prefer coming here and asking more knowledgeable and helpful people! :D

I have windows sound effects turned off. but occasionally hear a loud clicking noise coming from the notebook, even when the screen is turned off and i havent used it in a few hours. Always thought it was the hard drive, because there are not many other things that should make a loud click noise inside a computer.
