    Hello,

This is my first post and I was hoping to get some advice on where to buy a TM 8204 or possibly 8202. If I don’t decide to get one I’ll go for the Dell insp6k. I know these can be brought direct from Dell.

I'm living in the UK/Nottinghamshire and due to the mixed forum member reviews I feel that I must demo the laptop before purchase. Following the links via the Acer website (who unfortunately I believe do not ship direct) I have found a company called 'Easy Computers (aka http://www.acernotebooks.co.uk?)'. Has anyone used this company before?, was they any good?. Or is anyone aware of any stores within my locality which sell the TM 8204/02?.

It just seems that Acer make it hard to get your hands on this laptop...

    Many thanks

I'm still considering the inspiron 6000... tough choice... The location of the fan grill on the TM bothers me slightly...

Well ur hand works better warm than it does cold :p

When I have cold hands, i get slower at typing and stuff

The grill of my Acer Aspire 1694 is to the right too, but is near to the back and I don't feel it at all. But when I do feel the warm air coming out of the grill, I don't mind it. In fact, it feels nice :)

The Acer TravelMate 8204 is MUCH more powerful than a dell 6000

If I were you, I would spend the money on a nice dell 9400 which can have a kick ass 7800GTX graphics card. (The battery life isn't too amazing tho)

Hmm... well I would use this laptop for work so i'm wondering if the hot air would annoy...

    ....(Still considers Dell Insp 6k)

www.acernotebooks.co.uk looks good. Plus they also have a showroom...

I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE... IM ORDERING THE Acer TravelMate 8204WLMi from www.acernotebooks.co.uk!! :D

Style is important and in that department the 8204 is a no brainier. If I get any dead pixels or the placement of the fan grill annoys then ill return.

Will keep you posted on how things go. :D

    Thanks.

dell inspiron 6000 is a piece of junk compared to the 8204. not even in the same ballpark.

the fan heat is not annoying, in fact, i almost never ever notice it. if ur hand is more than 2 inches from the fan its non existant

    Congrats on buying ur 8204!!!!

I really wanted one, but at the time, I couldn't afford it :(

And I agree with Tay. The dell i6000 is poo. It's 3.8cm thick as well! yuk! Thats so bad for such a low powered notebook.

I wanted to buy 8200 and traveled 2 hrs to see it and then the salesman who sells Acer and Asus told me they sold ~20 of Acer 8200s and half were returned due to different problems, mostly related to overheating. So I gave up on it (and I loved so much that carbon look, but...not worth the risk)

    Hmm, that’s interesting...

I'll see how I get on. If any problems then I'll simply send it back under the T&C's...

I recall my last Toshiba p20 17inch suffered from heat...

Well I'd wonder what comission the sales person gets :)

Seriously though, the 8200 does have a couple of issues, the screen has the "grey brightness square" issue, which some people have problems with (can't say I've noticed it at all) it also has Acer bloatware installed (which is some of the worst software I've had the misfortune to have to use) and some people seem to have real problems with the heat vent (again not noticed anything at all myself).

Um, what else, the LAN issue (resolved with a patch, but as brought it has an issue) the bluetooth problem (bluetooth kicks out every couple of hours I hear, never used a bluetooth device myself so honestly don't know but).

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

There are quite a few people that have a buzzing noise eminating from the right side of the laptop. Note, it has nothing to do with the speakers. It happens when the ATI settings are set to full acceleration. One place to reproduce it is in the car demo video in the ATI control panel

    Hmm,

It’s difficult to find the perfect laptop with no issues. I guess it comes down to a person’s individual tolerance to certain issues. I feel that the TM8204 should be of reasonable quality otherwise I would suspect there would be a recall. Plus the reviews seem ok…

For me it was always between the TM8204 or Dell Insp6k. My company brought 3 Dell Insp6k's and were just noticing its funny quirks. With my Toshiba sat p20, it had issues with heat. I remember having to open up the laptop to apply AS thermal compound onto the heat sink.

I guess what I’m fussy about is having a reasonable screen that’s of good quality.

I'll let you know how I get on.... (Checks citylink,…………. parcel loaded onto van :) ...suits you sir!)

    Ps. acernotebooks.co.uk doesn’t mess about.

    I'm impressed, but also disappointed....

My screen has some weird odd grey space at the bottom right. Perhaps not enough to be especially bothersome.

However my ati graphics appears to be buzzing?. Has anyone else experienced this?
