Few days ago i have bought Acer Aspire 5135 with preinstalled Vista. It is pretty possible that one day i will install second OS WinXP or even erase present Vista and reformat HDD in a different way. So, i have found Acer's page with drivers http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5315.html and many drivers are for both XP and Vista (you can check the list of drivers). Some are only for Vista but i suppose that chipset driver or wireless adapter driver can be found without problem, but what i can't find is keyboard driver for XP (There is LaunchManager keyboard present for Vista only). As i understand, this driver is vital for multimedia buttons, Fn+<key> combinations etc.
So, here is the question: Does anybody know where can i find this keyboard driver for XP? Maybe driver from some other notebook model would work? If you know anything - share your knowledge please.

And btw, it isn't important, but anyway, is there any ability to enable combinations of Fn+<key> and multimedia buttons in Linux?

Well, have you tried to actually start XP installation? Yesterday I've got an attempt - just to replace Vista. The general problem is that XP cannot find any HDD's - simply since it hasn't driver for built in motherboard SATA controller.

Another problem is, that if you even will have a driver, you don't have a FDD to put it to installation at very beginning (when it asks to press F3 to install 3'rd party SCSI drivers).

So, I think it would be very hard to install XP on this notebook.

About Linux. I have installed Ubuntu 7.10 on this notebook - almost without problems. I still have no sound, but I think this can be solved. Some keys, such as volume was successfully mapped without any interraction - however, they most likely has standard ID's such as XF86AudioVolume etc.

I'll try to map Fn+ buttons today, I think - they should work over event mechanism of XOrg > 7.0

If you are looking for the XP version of launch manager for your aspire 5315 you can find it here

Acer has provided XP drivers for specific models on that link (part of the acer euro FTP)

    Hope this helps you :)

Dragonstorm there are ways to get around that XP sata issue search the forums and you will see what others have done.

Well, hell with that XP i have also installed Ubuntu 7.10, wanted to try it long time ago. So, how did you fix the sound? (if you did of cource) and did you manage to make wifi work? WiFi connection isn't even present in "Network Settings". I'm a newbie to Linux, but i have found some manuals about making wifi work, found Madwifi.org website but all this is like a puzzle for me. This page http://madwifi.org/wiki/Compatibility/Atheros#AtherosAR5006EG says that this notebook's adapter "Atheros AR5006EG" has something special about it, some module insertion sequence...
    Any ideas anyone plz?

    Hi,

I installed XP on my aspire 5315, but I cannot find a porper VGA driver. I downloaded the intel accelerator, but right after starting the setup, it gives me "your system does not meet the minimum requirements". I can't see why, it must be the lack of Vista. on the Acer homepage there is a driver only for Vista, but nothing for XP. Any idea how to proceed?

You need to set the HD to IDE in the setup menu (press F2durings startup). I wonder if you will also experience problems after sleep/hybernation? My 5315 is overheating and shuts down because the fan does not come on after I in stalled Windows XP.
