I really like the Thinkpads: few complaints about battery, reliable, etc., but I need to stretch my dollar. I can only spend $500-$800 USD.

Acer appears to be up to snuff with IBM, no? What model should I consider for web browsing, Office suite applications and occasional music downloads and cd burning? I would like it to have 512/mobil processor ?/60-80 G hdd/ decent speakers a la JBL/cd burner/wifi button like my wifes Compaq Preario, 2-3 USB ports.

Any suggestions? If not ACer, who? Thanks.

I think Acer offers good value, but thet are not as well built as ThinkPads.

I was robbed by a sweet little old lady on a motorized cart and I didn't even see it coming.

if you're gonna buy Aspire, i recommend that you go to the nearest computer shop and check the screen of that laptop. I was going to buy 1690 or so, but when i saw Acer CrystalBrite-screen, i was real disappointed. It's terrible! It reflects all possible light you can ever imaginate. So, no... No Acer CrystalBrite for me.

Travelmate serie is good, if you wanna get more battery life. You didn't mention about gaming but like in my laptop (4601 -> radeon x600), there are g-cards even in TM serie that are suitable for gaming too. Unfortunately, the better g-card the slower battery life usually.
