So my TSSTcorp cd/dvd combo doesn't work, and as I'm going to buy a new one (Acer's service wants me to ship them the whole laptop, my os is changed.... and I need it... so won't do this way ) I wondered which one could be good. Any issues with this poor tsstcorp ? I found several threads on this on forums, so it really seems to be a bad writer, mine never finalized a copy... Lite-on are good ? What about Nec ? Thanks for any constructive answer !

LG is you laptop still on warrenty? if so you can put on credit card and they might do exchange under warrenty i done that before
they also end up replace the drive with lg -
I had a Pioneer DVR-K15RA installed in my laptop, pretty good drive I guess but it started to wear out after 9 months.
I personally tried to avoid the Slimtype SOSW-833S (its a rebadged LiteOn drive or it is one). I find it to be very unreliable. One time Acer replaced my old drive with the SOSW-833S, it didn't read any disc of mine, all I could hear were grinding noises, this was after waiting 3 days for repair, within an hour of getting it back I had to send it back for repair. Then they replaced it with the Pioneer DVR-K15RA.
It seems to be a real hit or miss when it comes to getting the drive replaced by Acer, you just have to hope you get a good drive and not get stuck with an unreliable one.
After my last repair I got a Slimtype SSW-8015S, works great, surprisingly its transfer rate is Ultra DMA Mode 4, before I have only seen DVD-RW drives with transfer rates of only Mode 2, but this one was surprising. -
I called them again, and finally I can send the dvd writr alone, coooool ! I will ask them to send me back anything but a tsstcorp, to much bad reviews on it...

I had a TS-L632M which was replaced because of unreliable burning with some media. I've also got a TS-L632D which is essentially the same drive without the LightScribe. Note that the SN- series Samsung burners actually come off the same production line.
Last year I had a Teac burner which was very well behaved. I've also got a Liteon SOSW-852 as backup. It's given me no problems and is much faster at ripping audio CDs than the TS-burners. One of Liteon's advantages is that it is easy to overcome the DVD region coding.
The worst in my experience is Matsh!ta: i had one on a Sony notebook and it burnt Sony branded CDs shuch that no one else could read them.
