My niece just bought an Acer Aspire E1-571G without Windows and I have installed Windows 8 on it. Everything works. :) However, there are two base system devices in device manager which have exclamation signs on them. Also, I am unable to figure out which driver to install for the touchpad. The Acer support site has touchpad drivers for Alps, Elantech and Synaptics. Which one should I install, or should I just stick with the default driver that Windows 8 has installed?

EDIT: the two base system devices disappeared after installing the driver for the card reader.

See if this app from Acer is of any help- it's supposed to detect hardware to help you choose the driver.

    Sorry. All it says is:
    LAN Broadcom
    VGA Intel
    Wireless LAN Atheros

Currently the driver loaded for the touchpad is P/S2 compatible mouse. I suppose I could try them all one by one and see which one takes, but I'm hoping there is a better solution.

You can always check the device ID in the device manager and google it.

This is what I can see:

    ACPI\VEN_ETD&DEV_0500
    ACPI\ETD0500
    *ETD0500

    *ETD0500
    *PNP0F13

Googling gives inconclusive results. :( The driver is reporting generic information - nothing hardware specific. It seems that all three drivers will work and give basic functionality, but only one will enable advanced features.

Ok. I spoke to Acer customer care/technical support. The guy assured me that it was Synaptics, and that was the driver that I was supposed to install. Well, I did that, and I can see settings for the buttons only - none of the advanced features that a touchpad is supposed to have. So much for technical support. :p I'll try the Elantech driver next.

Success! :D Elantech it was. A tad disappointed, though, that the only approach that worked was the trial and error method.
