Hi,
I have a Acer Aspire 5742, which has one vertical white line going through the middle of the screen.
I have the web for a reason and a fix. I can't find a sure fix but reasons are said to be from overheating, video card needs reseating or the screen need replacing.
If the video card does need reseating then does anyone know how to remove the bottom cover, because after removing all the screws i can see i can't get around the VGA port.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Video card doesn't need re-seating since it's integrated into the motherboard.
It's most likely an issue with LCD itself (or less likely with a ribbon connector).
The easiest way is to connect your notebook to the external monitor and check is the line appears there too. My guess is it won't meaning it's the LCD itself not video card or drivers/software. -
I tend to agree with downloads.
Would it be worth booting into safe mode (so a generic driver is loaded). Very occasionally video drivers can do weird things but this does sound more hardware related. -
You basically have a "dead line" - a column of dead pixels. (On TN+Film panels, a dead pixel appears white, and a stuck/hot one appears black. It is the other way around for IPS, MVA, PVA and almost all other panel types.)
