Does Acer actually design and manufacture their notebooks themselves? The reason I ask is that I have an Extensa 4420. It looks somewhat distinctive because it has a fanned keyboard.

Today I was in Office Depot and I saw a computer that looked just like mine, but when I looked a bit closer it was an eMachines model. Although some of the buttons were a little different, it clearly had the same case and keyboard as my Acer.

Did eMachines buy it from Acer? Or vice versa? Or, did they both have the machines manufactured by a third party?

    ^^^ Yep. ;)

Gateway bought Emachines years ago. Then somewhat recently, Acer bought Gateway. So they own both.

Acer took over though, so they design the notebooks for all three companies.

Acer is an OEM. Actually, Acer doesn't even assemble the notebooks. Its like a completely financial, customer support and repair company. The notebooks that are sold by Emachines, Gateway and Acer, come completely built from ODMs such as Quanta, Compal, Wistron, Inventec, etc. (That's why no CTOs)
