A simple request from a very happy Acer owner.
I regularly see "help" posts from new owners that don't really understand how their Acer works.
Take your new lappie. Use it. Understand how the Recovery Tools work.
Leave it the way you received from Acer for at least a week.
Then read up here on the Acer forum how to go about changing things orderly without any pain.
Please
Cheers,
Theo

And one more thing. When you start your ACeR for the first time. You are asked to burn some disks DO IT and save your self from trouble later.
Start> Programmes> Acersytems. here you will find a full set of instructions to do this.
you will need option one. make sure you have nothing running, switch off wifi, bluetooth(if fitted).
Please burn them as it saves time later.
follow some basic rules and you will have a trouble free laptop.
Enjoy
all the best,
Phil -
I'd say leave it stock for at least two weeks and do the Microsoft updates !

Man, it's a notebook, not a person. What to understand? If it ain't broken... don't fix it. But that's all. If it is... don't try understand how it feels, "his" emotions... because it's a god damn notebook. That's all.

Kindly remember, this Forum serves mainly newcomers to Acer.
We aim to help people to avoid making mistakes many others have made before them. Us old Acer users on this forum both understand and thoroughly enjoy Acer. That is why we are here to guide.
@ CQSTELUSH
Happy to hear you will never need help here.
Good luck with your Server 2008 guide.
Bye,
Theo -
but the best thing you can do is ask on here for help as its free and not X amount per min to phone acer support.
We see it a lot on here where the problem would have been solved by burning and using the recovery disks.
most of us enjoy helping and on the odd occasion we have a little Victory.
thats got to be worth the effort
chat soon,
Phil -
Heck, you guys have been more helpful than Acer Support on a few occasions for me.
-
Hats off to Hoggie and Bigo and team.
Me, I am just a loyal Acer supporter who really canno't help with technical support as my Acer has been just problem free....
Whenever I change something, I do it methodically. So I can go back to what worked before and not get lost in a sea of changes. And not know where I am and what went wrong....
Simply fiddling out of curiosity is reckless. Knowledgeable fiddling is a far better option.
Hence, the creation of this thread.
I am sure the Team above appreciates your thanks,
Cheers TehSuigi

the only bad things i will ever say about ACER will most definatley involve thier customer support.... or lack there of.... as for thier hardware...
i challange anyone to find a better laptop than mine for $348 (or $495 after RAM, CPU , and DVD Burner upgrades) -
$348 ? BigO can you do me a favor? Please take a look at this, click on 'Ficha technica' and tell me what is the difference between your laptop and that one
Almost double price..The prices here are killing me..
-
she got hers free with a mobile phone.
http://www.mobiles.co.uk/free-acer-laptop.html -
that $348 US was a ONE DAY special price at wal-mart back on NOV 1st 2007
the 5315-2153 jumped to $399 over night,,, and now a comparable 5315 is priced at $468 for the cheapest one available (due to the upgradability of it,,, acer has raised prices and i'm sure the WEAK US $ has played a major part in the price increase since then too)
any way.. the differences
ITEM.......2153...VS.......202G12Mi
CPU........Celeron 530........celeron 550
memory...2X512mb............2gig (not sure if its 1 or 2 pieces)
DVD.......NO DVD BURNER... DL burner
HDD.......80G....................120G
OS.........VISTA basic........LINUX
those are the major things... and most likely the ONLY things different -
-
$499 US
has a 80g HDD,, DL DVD burner,,, 1gig (w/ 1 open slot),,, -
I agree with this thread 100%...
Based on my observations over the last 4+ years of monitoring this acer board, alot of people's problems could have been avoided by just taking the time to understand how their shiny new acer works; before they go pulling it apart physically or trying to install linux or some other OS without first creating the recovery discs. Oh it also really helps you if you can find the service manual for your model. -
I'm a new Acer user who just picked up a 6920 the other day and I'm trying to do just that - understand it. I have a few questions that I hope someone here can answer for me. Here's the model I bought from Circuit City http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Acer...15816/catOid/-12963/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
It came preinstalled with Vista Home Premium. And while that's all well and good, I really wanted to install XP in addition to Vista, because of some compatibility issues with some of the programs I need. So my goal is a dual boot of Vista and XP, hopefully with a more "clean" version of Vista without all the bells and whistles provided by Acer (unless you can convince me why I should keep all that crap).
Luckily I had the foresight to immediately make the backup discs of both the factory install and the drivers and programs.
I noticed that the HD came pre-partitioned. One partition called "Acer" with all the Vista stuff, and another partition which was just completely blank. So I decided to install XP on the blank partition, and that's where I am now. When I boot up the computer, I can't figure out a way to get a screen to come up to give me the option of booting up with either Vista or XP. It just loads XP automatically. I tried hitting all the 'F' buttons and only F2 gives me some BIOS options, but nothing that lets me choose which OS to boot with. Did I do something wrong, or am I just missing something?
Also, when I installed XP and got the screen where it asks you to choose which partition to install it on, I noticed there were 2 hidden partitions. I don't remember what they were called, but can someone explain the purpose of them, and whether or not I'm allowed to get rid of them? -
I did many things with my Acer 5920g, disassembled and reassembled it, reapply thermal paste and stuff, undervolting and overclocking, reflashing bios, installing new drivers, modified the boot.ini, used a can of compressed air on it, but up until now, I can't even burn my factory default disc...
I'm using DVDs, and the first one would burn fine, but the trouble kicks in when it prompts me for the second DVD, no matter the type of DVD i put in, it keeps asking for the "same type" of DVD hat I'd previously used for the first disc.
Tried reinstalling erecovery, but it doesn't work, anyone with any clue? Google'd, but it seems that there's no proper solution to this. -
About that hidden partition..this is the ACER's D2D Recovery partition, you made the recovery cds/dvds using D2D... -

I installed XP on the blank partition that came with my 6920... but now I can't boot up Vista. Is there any way to dual boot Vista and XP using the blank partition that comes default on the 6920? Apparently when I installed XP I screwed up the MBR.

You'll need to use Vista Recovery CD. -

I have a acer aspire 5502 laptop, which has 2 partitions c & d, i want to format only the c drive and reinstall xp into it. i do not have any xp install cd. what i have r 4 recovery discs which i created at the time of installation. my D drive has a lot of data which i do not want to touch. How do i get c formatted and reinstall XP on it using the recovery disks without touching the d drive.
Please help. Thanks -
i have no clue if using the recovery CDs will cause the D partition to be reformatted or not.... it seems to work differently for different models... -
recovery disks on mine left D: and PQService(D2D) alone.
all my Folders where left alone and safe on D:
Phil -
Same here with a 5684WLMi. Recovery did not affect the D partition or PQ service partition.
All documents, photo's etc. safe on D.
Cheers,
Theo -
Ditto
correct all of D: is safe -

seems like a lot of new ACERS are flying out of the stores
gotta love back to school time -
Thanks alot i've done most of the things you guys have mentioned, how ever i'm about to upgrade my graphics card to a 9500M GS, rescently i've tried overclocking my current graphics card the 9300M G (failed) since the 16xx version doesn't allow overclocking, everytime i tried it it went back to stock settings.Any way I love acer no matter what anyone says yay!
Why not understand your Acer first before you fiddle with it?
