Ok i have a aspire 5100 (an oldie but a goodie) w/ Vista. Problem started a few months ago seemingly out of nowhere. What it does is that the lcd does not turn on after a restart or wake up from sleep mode. Im usually left to use the laptop on an external monitor. Hitting fn f5 to switch between the two screens only gives me an option for the external monitor (due to lcd not being detected). Display settings also only detects 1 monitor which is the external. Then on what seems to be random days and/or being off for few days on boot up it will turn on w/ the laptops lcd and both monitors being detected and all will be fine until i have to reboot or wake up from sleep mode again. I have swapped out the lcd inverter, lcd lamp, screens video cable, and not a complete lcd assembly from a working laptop. All produce the same issues. What can I be overlooking or try next?

    Hi there,

this is not a fix but I have the very same problem (same model and OS) I was thinking of changing the invertor but afte reading your post I will not be doing that now. I will be watching your thread with interest to see if anyone can explain. I also have a problem with my DVD rom and short of doing a complete system restore is the only way I can see of resolving these issues.

    hope you get it sorted

Ya im suspecting this is a software issue as most of the hardware components have been changed other than the motherboard.
