    Hi,

I have the 4965AGN WLAN on my lappy and I'm getting speed of 144Mb/s on my wireless network. I have another computer with Edimax 7728n wireless pci card and with it i can get up to 300Mb/s. I want to try to upgrade my 4965 to a new 5300 mini pcie so maybe my speed will improve. I wonder if the 5300 will work on my lappy ?

    Thanks

    Liam

It should work just fine but I am not sure if you are going to get the speed increase you are hoping. Both cards feature the Draft-N protocol but the 4965 has maximum speed 300 Mb/s where the 5300 has 450 Mb/s.
(Just a reminder 300 Mb/s is different to 300 MB/s; 300 Mb/s is equal to 37.5 MB/s). The other factor is that both cards has 3 ports for antennas but the Acer 5920G is using only two (as many other laptops). So I don't know if you have to use all the antennas in order to enjoy the full speed of the network with the 5300 card. In other words you might need to replace the antenna cables which might not be that easy.

When i upgraded my 3945 to 4965 i added the third antenna.

My router is Edimax 6574n, it is only 2.4GHz spectra with 20/40MHz channel and gives 300MB/s only at 40MHz.

The 4965 can work in 2.4GHz with only 20MHz Channel and 5GHz with 20/40MHz Channel. So that mean that 2.4GHz will work at 144Mb/s maximum, and 5GHz will work at 300Mb/s maximum.

As far as i know the 5300 can work in 2.4/5GHz with both 20/40MHz channels at 450Mb/s maximum, so i should get 300Mb/s connection with it.

It should work then. I can't see any reason why it shouldn't. But I am not aware of the specification details for the 5300 card

As far as I know 4965 is better than 5300 when it comes to signal strenght and they are equal when it comes to speed. At least you would make a comparison for us and prove whether I'm right or wrong :)

So I got the card and installed it. I started the computer and it recognized it immediately. Vista (64bit) installed the drivers automatically and YES. Everything worked well.

I downloaded the card last drivers from Intel (ver 12.4.3.9) and installed it instead of MS generic drivers. I did some tests and notice that my bandwidth still on 144Mb/s, so I did as advised on another post and changed the card configurations "802.11n channel width for band 2.4" from "only 20MHz" to "auto" and "Fat Channel Intolerant" from "enable" to "Disable". That did the trick. Now I'm getting bandwidth of 300Mb/s stable.

Comparing the 5300AGN to the 4965AGN, I came to the conclusion that the 5300AGN is far more better. The speed I'm getting is more stable and the wireless range coverage is increased.

I got the first one. It fits exactly in the wlan slot (it exactly the same size as my old card). Be sure that you order the right fit, because you'll need to screw it to its place.

Thanks man- Mine is the same size. I also got the antenna you suggested. Wish me luck. Any recommendation on a 450mbps rated wireless N?

So am i correct to assume that all 4965agn and 5300agn cards are compatible with the 5920g?

They should because Acer is one of the few OEM who don't whitelist WLAN Card.
    Hopefully it stays that way.
