I have a friends 5920G which looks like it's having the common GPU card failure, so I've been searching around for solutions and found this forum. What I was wondering was would a 3650 from a 6920 fit a 5920G. The GPU has a heat spreader plate/bracket type thingy covering it and was wondering if this was removable or if it would fit unaltered?

It is removable and you have to remove it. It will work.

That's good to know, thanks, if I can get it at the right price : )

I presume replacing the GPU with another AMD/ATi is going to less problematic that changing to a Nvidia card?

I've noticed HD2400 MXM-II cards on eBay and wondered if they were any good. As my friend is an a budget and it's more a replacement issue, rather than an upgrade, he could save £10-15 by going for the HD2400 or would it be better to spend a bit more on a newer, more powerful card. Do the newer cards use less power or produce less heat in everyday use, outwith gaming? AFAIK, it wont be used for gaming much, apart from the odd game of GTA3, when his young grandkid is round : )

Well for those £10-15, you'll get twice the performance, so it's up to you.

I didn't realise there was that much of a difference in power.

I've ordered some copper shims and have good quality thermal compound available (AS5 and mx-2), so overheating should hopefully not be too much of an issue.

Thanks for your advice, triturbo : )
