Sorry, but to be honest, there is no way. With some overclocking (lots) might be able to run 720p. If you're way lucky, seriously, I have Dell Inspiron 6000 1GB RAM 1.60GHZ Intel Pentium - and there is no 720p HD possible there at all. Sorry! The laptop in your sig, however, could easily run HD. Just so you know. :3

Would any of the ones on this page for under $310 be able to play HD?

Anything under $310 is highly unlikely to be able to play 720p, let alone 1080p, get into the ~$600+ price range for 720p, ~$900+ for 1080p. You could just downgrade the video quality to 480p, that should play fluently on anything in that price range...I don't see your page link, by the way.

Can add a Broadcom Crystal HD decoder to *some* netbooks for HD playback. A better option would be a HP DM1 or Lenovo X120E with the E350 CPU + HD6350M GPU. Or consider s/h ebay 12" 2530P, Lenovo X200 or CULVs like Acer 1810T, MSI U200, Asus UL20A.

The E-350 based machines defintely can play 720p HD video with no problem, and are reported to play 1080p as well. The older Kxxx series Neo with ATI 4225 GPU could defintely play 720p just fine, my roommate has an AO521 with a single core K125 at 1.7GHz and it plays 720p flawlessly, both in Windows and Ubuntu. 1080p is out of it's range of good playback tho, tends to skip a bit.

Look at the Asus 1215B with an E-350. They go for just over $400 and get excellent battery life.

In 720p yes, 1080p maybe, but I wouldn't recommend having anything else running when you are watching the 1080p videos. Also, listen to Sxooter, he obviously has more experience than I do with HD video on netbooks. :3

The Video in the later model Atom notebooks can JUST play 720p, if the laptop is otherwise doing nothing. But it's a close call. The ATI 4225 in the neo or the E-350's built in IGP are much better at video decoding, and they also have hardware decoding for a much wider variety of video encoding methods. The Atom's are really showing their age now, compared to the Neo/Fusion machines.

Sxooter is correct that the ATI 4225 is better for video decoding, I would check out one of those machines. Atom's are really starting to age, aren't they?
