I just received my new 4820TG from Amazon yesterday and was getting it set up to my liking. I made the Acer eRecovery disks immediately after I loaded up the first time, removed a lot of the unnecessary software, and downloaded a few new programs as well as drivers. I also installed Ubuntu so I could dual boot.
Well, I decided after all the tinkering to just go back to factory settings so I loaded up the recovery disks and they worked fine. As Win7 was finishing its install (it had loaded up to the desktop just fine), there was an Acer utility that was automatically installing all the drivers and, apparently, the bloatware. I left the machine to allow the Acer utility to finish, and when I came back I found the screen black with a blinking white cursor in the top lefthand corner. The system was unresponsive so I turned it off to have it reboot. Upon doing so, I found that the initial Acer screen pops up and then immediately goes into this black screen with the white cursor-- I'm not given the option to choose which OS to run or anything. I retried the recovery disks and encountered the same problem again. I used another computer to create a Win7 repair disk, which found no problems with the startup.
Any ideas what the problem is? My heart's telling me its a HDD problem, which is really sad on a brand new computer. Thanks for any help.

Are you able to use (Alt + F10) to enable Acer's Factory partition?
-
Yes. I just tried that and it loaded up to the eRecovery Management software.

Right now I'm restoring things back to default through the Acer Factory partition in case something went awry with my backup disks. I'll keep you posted.

Ran through all of that and when I restarted to complete the installation I encountered the same problem...

Not good. I would do this. Open the bottom if you are comfortable with that. Be careful not to break the little keys on the cover. Make sure the HD is in its housing and pressed tightly against its Sata connection. Then close it up and try to start. If you get the same stuff, contact Amazon for an RMA. It's going back.
If you're not comfortable taking the bottom door off, just get your return authorization.

Well I sent it back to Amazon. I really liked the machine until all this happened. I have high hopes for the replacement.

**Just an addendum: Amazon is fantastic. The return process was extremely easy, and my new system has already been shipped with two-day shipping even though I did it all relatively late this afternoon.**
