How do I know which drivers I will need to install once I get xp loaded onto my machine?
http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/AcerDrivers/Aspire 5610Z.pdf?CFID=265097&CFTOKEN=49174358
This website shows a lot of the drivers I may need. But there doesn't seem to be one for the sata hard drive.
Also, when I tried to load xp using my xp professional cd it gave me the blue screen of death. I assumed this is because it couldn't find my harddrive? I have a toshiba sata hard drive.
Where can I get the drivers for this hard drive and how do I install it? Can I use a flash drive (usb) and install it by pressing F6 at the start of the xp setup? I dont have a floppy disk drive by the way.
-
you shouldn't need any drivers for the HDD,, i just replaced an 80g IBM HDD that came factory from acer with a 200g Toshiba SATA 2.0 ( i was afarid i would have trouble since my laptop only supports the SATA 1-150 hdd). Thankfully my laptop accepted the HDD with no issues.
But when installing XP on a PC with a SATA HDD you do need to have the ACHI drivers on a floppy OR you need to customize an XP install CD by slipstreaming the ACHI (SATA) drivers into the CD so it can find the drivers durring the install.
this link has very good directions on how to do the install:
http://soulpass.com/2007/11/10/inst...essional-sp2-on-acer-aspire-5315-2153-laptop/
that should help you out... just use the CD method using Nlite to "slip stream" the ACHI drivers into the CUSTOM windows XP install CD you create.

Ok. I used nLite and it worked perfectly. Got into windows xp professional (wanted MCE) with no problems.
Then I had a device manager full of yellow !'s lol. I found my drivers on my other computer and loaded the wireless network broadcom driver using a flash drive. From there I connected to my network and downloaded everything else I needed. Every single device now has the proper driver and everything works without a hitch. I even got my launch manager back which I had deleted from vista previously.
From there I used a few workarounds to install IE7, WMP11, and Live Messenger 8.5. I also have my Avira software installed as well as adobe reader, winRar and a couple other necesseties.
This is where the problem starts though. I was only able to allocate 10.5 GB to my xp partition before I installed it. Vista for some reason couldnt do with less than 50 Gb or so and my Data partition, which doesn't even have an OS installed, would only give me 9.5 GB.
This is not enough space for XP! Is it safe for me to format the vista partition completely? I don't care if I lose it I can always borrow someones DVD later if I want it back as I still have my key on the bottom of the laptop. I just want to make sure that nothing gets removed that will cause XP not to work either.
Also one other problem. I want Windows Media Center so I can stream files to my Xbox360. I think I used an XP Professional VLK when I installed MCE and that is why it only installed XP pro. Is there a way to get MCE installed without hving to start fresh as I have spent about 6 hours installing drivers etc since I loaded XP on. If necessary feel free to PM me any help if you don't want to post here.
P.S. I have purchased Vista HP and XP Professional in the past, as well as an xbox360 so I feel I have given microsoft enough money, lol. I don't want to purchase XP MCE as well. The way I see it, I have media center on vista and I have XP Pro so I should be alloed to use both together. I have no problems with using a workaround to get this done.
Thanks! -
Glad to hear that the Nlite method worked for you...
you could easily get rid of Vista... infact if i were you i'd totally delete all the HDD partitons and reinstall XP as the only OS if you are going to get rid of VISTA might as well go all the way and do it right,,, you may want to keep that hidden partition that contains the quick recovery info (that's up to you). but i deleted all my partitions and made one 80g primary partition and installed XP pro on it.

you could easily get rid of VISTA totally...
did you make your Quick Restore Disks?? (just incase you wanna go back to Vista at a later date).
As far as the MCE is conserned i have no clue... i've never even seen a copy... never used it... but if you want to reinstall it should go alot quicker this time since you now have a CD w/ the SATA drivers slipstreamed into it, and you know where to find your drivers too. So it would probably be best for the stability of the OS to reinstall from scratch.
just my oppinion.

I don't have the restore disks made from vista. However I do still have the recovery partition in tact. Do I need to vista recovery disks to restore vista? Also, couldn't I just use someone elses vista dvd if I wanted to put vista back on?
One thing I do have is the microsoft windows update anywhere dvd. Doesthis have the necessary vista setup on it? If it does, I still have my recovery partition and my product key for the installation.
It's a real long process for me to make this machine a dual boot now and that would be the only way for me to get back into vista to make those restore disks. I don't think its worth it. If I want vista back sometime im sure I can get a disk if that will work.
As for MCE. apparently there is a workaround involving replacing a few files (patch i guess) on the CD2 for MCE of xp pro. The I should be able to install right from windows and not have to reformat or anything of the sort. Ill await yours or someones permission so to speak to go ahead and delete these partitions without having the recovery disks. Then I can free up the space I need to install the rest of my programs. -
before i delete the hidden partition, if i were you, i'd install the XP version of the Empowering Technology Framework, and then install the XP version of the Erecovery application, then try to make the recovery CDs using the Erecovery software,, i'm not sure how this will work considering that the recovery partition holds info and files for VISTA recovery, but it's worth a try. As far as using someone else's vista CD, that should work out as long as the COA key is accepted by the disk you use to install the OS... i know with XP retail version keys sometimes don't work on OEM install disks and vise versa... and there is always the issue of the recovery disks having drivers on the disk but using a retail or oem Vista CD will leave you without the manufacturers drivers installed... but if you couold find XP drivers for your model and downgraded the OS with no real trouble, then the vista drivers should be no problem since Acer should be supporting Vista for the next 3 to 5 yrs anyway.
i;d attempt to make the restore disks from within XP, it may work--- it may fail... then i'd uninstall the Erecovery and the E framework... and blow that hidden partition away.... it may only be 4 gig but hey thats 4 gig you can use, i remember my first hard drive, 30 megs... big back in 86.
anyway do what YOU feel is best for you.... thats the main thing.

Yea I can get that software for xp no problem. I have launch manager now so I can use the volume and media keys on the keyboard. Its available from the same flash page on the acer site as the other software. Ill give that a go...
Just for the record. What functionality does that recovery partition have exactly? Is it pretty much useless without a recovery disk? If I want vista back in the future i would just as well install the drivers myself as I would have to do it anyway if I used the OS preinstalled drivers. Even the vista ones are almost 2 years old now...
Anyway like I said ill give that recovery disk a try and post here again later. I don't expect it to work though. I imagine the xp versions of those software will be used to make disks for xp. -
unless you have the D2D recovery activated, and plan on using it.. (disk to disk recovery) i believe it allows users to restore thier PC directly from the hidden partition by pressing <alt> <F10> or f12;; or some key combo durring POST.. i've never tried it but i think the BIOS has a recovery process built into it and is called up by above mentioned keystrokes.. and it then rebuilds the primary partition [c:] and restores OS to factory state... it may even wipe the D: partition.. like i said i've never tried it...
other that the above, i don't think it has any functionality at all, it just stores the data so you can make the quick restore disks... but to the best of my knowledge the partition is only used to make the disks and is not required to do the reinstall... unless you are using the D2D recovery mentioned in the first paragraph.
do what ever YOU feel comfortable with.... i have disabled the D2D recovery in my BIOS and deleted the hidden partition months ago... but i did make the recovery disks first.
hope it helps,
bigozone

Im have the same model 5610z have a HD 120GB Sata.
Im downgrade to Xp prof. Sp2 and install the basic drivers.
http://www.acerpanam.com/flex/acerdrivers/bin/drivers.html?CFID=313610&CFTOKEN=63400648
I am not sure if it brings a sata HD, as it works well and I do not ask me for sata drivers.
is sata im but in device manager appear at ata ? -
leus, did you use a floppy disk durring install of XP, or did you make a custom version of the XP install disk using something like Nlite??
if not, assuming you actually have a sata hdd, the only way XP could complete the install process would be if you (or someone) went into the BIOS and changed the "HDD transfer method" (not the exact term) from SATA to PIO or ATA...
in my experience it has been imposible to install XP on a SATA system without doing one of the 2 options...
1. Using Nlite to make XP w/ SATA drivers or using floppy and pressing F6 when prompted by install. BY FAR THE BEST OPTION
2. Using BIOS option to downgrade HDD interface to PIO or ATA.
Causes you to loose preformance of the SATA transfer rates.
lastly i would suggest downloading your drivers from the european site of acer, on that site it actually lists what OS the drivers are compatible with at the end of each file name... the us site doesn't.
just a thought, hope it helps,,

The NLite method worked great for me. Yes the drive is sata, where you see ata, I think it says serial ata, serial being the 's'. I seen that in the device manager.
The drivers you need for the sata hard drive are actually the chipset drivers. For me it was the Intel 945 chipset drivers for my mainboard that had the serial ata controller on it. Its not the hard drive itself that requires the driver its the motherboards chipset that needs the driver to recognize the sata hard drive.
In regards to my install it went perfectly. Am running media center edition on my laptop now which is cool. Activation went smoothly as did installing all the newest windows programs (IE7, WMP11, Live Messenger, Windows Installer 3.1, etc etc).
I completely removed the vista partition but I left the hidden partition intact. Just piece of mind for myself I guess. I most likely will have a new laptop before I want vista back anyway but I just wanted to know I have access to something I paid for.
The only problem I am having now is streaming divx files to my xbox 360. However that is another seperate problem from this...
Thanks again for the help bigozone. -
no problem, that's why a lot of us come here,, to help each other out and to learn..

( and then install the sata driver ). http://www.acerpanam.com/flex/acerdrivers/bin/drivers.html?CFID=313610&CFTOKEN=63400648
the next time I have to use some of the 2 options?
thanks

This happens because probably you installed xp under IDE. This happened to me, installed xp under IDE then tried to install Intel Matrix Storage Driver and it came up with the same error msg.
-
check the BIOS setting and see what the HDD transfer method is set to
IDE or AHCI..
that should tell you if you are in IDE or SATA (achi) mode
