Right, I've seen a thousand and one threads on the Ferrari 4005WLMi Series and there are two things that are crystal clear.
1. The Bluetooth Mouse is not so good.
2. It looks really really cool.
There are various other issues that exist such as the nature of the apparently low spec bits of hardware ie. Hard Drive, Ram, Video Ram etc.
The Hard Drive has been defended in one of it's reviews by someone who seemed knowledgable enough on such things. The RAM has been defended also(by the same guy), (faster than DDR2 DDR...hmm okay) and the video performance has been equally lauded and deplored.
Where the laptop has been given a lower rating the reasons for the problems seem to be the bottleneck of Hard Drive and RAM which to the layman seem to be low spec.
Okay so I'm not put off yet. BUT what is important for me is upgradability. The ATI Mobility RADEONĀ® XPRESS 200 series chipset Motherboard varies wildly depending on where you find it (invariably in laptops though).
:base: But what I want to know is can the RAM be upgraded or are 'dual soDIMM modules' limited to DDR only.
AND. In general is it upgradable... ie the hard drive as well...

Yes, RAM can be upgraded to any 200pin DDR SODIMM. The only advantage for DDR2 RAM is that it consumes less power but at the expense of higher timings(or latencies - time taken to access the data). This destroys any speed advantages DDR2 might have. Infact for AMD systems DDR2 RAM running @ 533MHz is slower than DDR RAM running @ 400MHz. Just because DDR2 is newer does not mean it is better. In the future AMD will shift to DDR2 memory but right now DDR is stil pretty fast.
The Hard drive is also upgradable to any 2.5" notebook drive. RAM and HDD are the main things that can be upgradede in virtually any laptop. I am pretty sure the cpu can also be upgraded but that would involve disassembling the laptop and also voids your warranty. The Acer Ferrari is a nice laptop but you do pay for the flashy design and branding.
