Hi guys. I'm thinking of picking up this unit here:
http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=026729&cid=NBK.300.555
as it seems like it'll do everything I need.
I'm recording voice overs and singing with it and it's specifically meant to be thin and light for travel - with a good enough screen resolution to edit with the machine while I'm on the go. I'd prefer a Windows XP unit (I'm trying to use Cubase LE and I'm not certain it'll work on Windows 7 Pro) but I can get an IT friend of mine to install XP on it if I need to.
My biggest concern with it - is noise. Is the fan really noisy? I know that I can regulate the fan speed etc. with the little apps that have been created for the unit here on this very board, but how long can one leave off the fan without the unit getting incredibly hot? I'm recording with this unit fairly close to a large diaphragm condenser mic, so really - it needs to be as quiet as possible.
Any experiences with this unit that you'd like to share? I'd really appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks, guys! All the best, -- Jodi

I think it would be a much better deal to pick up a slightly different model AS1810T-8968@Futureshop for only $50 CAD more
Fan is not noisy at all. In fact, if you do software undervolt + only do word processing/web browsing you will never even hear the fan. Literally.
There are like 4 threads about 1410/1810T check them out. They have ALL information you need + 10 times more. -
Hi prikolchik. Thanks for the advice. What makes this unit you're suggesting better? Faster processing speed? I notice it's a T and not a TZ... (isn't the TZ the newer unit?) Or am I missing more of its different features? If I'm missing something, please do let me know. I appreciate your help! Oh - and checking the link, the unit is out of stock. I wonder if they're dreaming when they call the unit "silver"? I didn't think the 11.6" unit came in silver (the 13.3" does, right?) - just black and blue (though apparently, reading over the threads for the unit, it comes in white and red also in Germany ...)
Actually, I'm doing some audio recording with the unit ... but that's the only time the fan needs to be completely silent. -
My 1810tz is O.E.
Also the Z at the end of an acer model usually means a less expensive and therefore less equipped than the model without the Z -
I see. Thanks for explaining, dart22. As far as the less expensive model is concerned, the only difference I can see is the processing unit (am I missing something?). They otherwise look pretty identical. And the problem of course, is that the Futureshop edition isn't actually in stock. :-/
How do you like your 1810tz so far? -
hi,
I like my 1810tz very much, keyboard is great, the size, performance, battery runtime.Dislikes:de noise level of the cpu fan,and the shiny top,it's a fingerprint magnet!.But for the money it is an great product,I love it.And I would recomment it
