So your wifi isn't working? The 3680 has two wifi modules. One is the Aetheros chipset the other broadcom(more rare). Make sure you have the right driver installed for your wifi chipset. I recently got all the drivers I needed off Acer's website to install Windows again(have Linux now) and there were separate drivers for each hardware.

The internet in general isn't working(I haven't tried wifi yet as the modem is in my housemates room and he disconnected the aerial as it kept overheating the modem or something....)
the network is connected ,shows the speed etc, but the pages say, ' this page cannot be found'

Interesting... I remember having this problem with a desktop at one point. Well, we can start trouble shooting with a simple command prompt test. Open command prompt and type in
    Code:
    ping www.gooogle.com
This will have your computer "ping"(send a small data packet) to googles server. If the data packet can get out of your computer and to the server command prompt will show the replys from google as shown below.

    Code:
Pinging www.l.google.com [64.233.169.99] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 64.233.169.99: bytes=32 time=56ms TTL=241
    Reply from 64.233.169.99: bytes=32 time=54ms TTL=241
    Reply from 64.233.169.99: bytes=32 time=55ms TTL=241
    Reply from 64.233.169.99: bytes=32 time=56ms TTL=241

    Ping statistics for 64.233.169.99:
        Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
        Minimum = 54ms, Maximum = 56ms, Average = 55ms
This will give you a good idea where the problem lies. It might be your web browser or firewall blocking web pages or it could be a hardware problem. If you can successfully ping google, then the hardware is working fine. It will be a software issue that needs to be corrected. If you cannot ping google then there is a hardware/software problem that may include a driver issue or internet connection settings making this happen.

what values do you get for ipconfig? don't post them but ensure that you are getting proper values for IP, subnet mask, and gateway, they should all be populated (dhcp server, dns, etc) by the dhcp server. If you get a 169.x.x.x address, that is your problem, you're not getting a proper IP address.

You're not using a router? You're directly connecting to the modem with your laptop/pc?

    can you ping localhost?

Do you have a dsl or cable modem that you can turn off and then on again? Sometimes a hard reset of the hardware(unplug/turn off all hardware for 10 -30 seconds and then back on again) will help clear things up. However if you have other computers that are getting internet it shouldn't be the modem. Also, if you have a router, is there a way your traffic is being limited by any router security features? I think my router can restrict its use to a set number of devices at one time.

Obvious I'm a bit of a novice...haha. Pretty sure it's dsl so I'll try turning off the modem for a while , see how that goes.
The modem and stuff is all in my housemates room and I'm running my cable from his room to my pc...So maybe he has to do something from his end to fix my problem????

Your welcome and I'm glad to hear that that fixed your problem. If it wasn't the modem I wasn't sure were to start testing things that could be wrong. Glad to hear everything is working fine again.

last week southpark and the whole state lost thier internet service...

the internet needed to be unplugged and then pluged back in....
the router had to be reset and only the 10 y/o (can't remember if it was kyle or STAN) knew to unplug it in order to solve the problem...

    later,
