Hi, I was wondering if anybody could help me out.My acer 3680 laptop started getting a message 'limited or no connectivity' and my internet won't work.
I have tried everything,Turned off the modem/router (which is in my housemates room),set the ip address and stuff manually, used the winsock fix, even formatted the laptop to no success.
The cable works fine and my pc connects no problems.
    AGHHHHHHHHHHHHH any ideas.
    Thanks

    Hi,thanks for the fast response.
Pretty sure it's the right driver as it was working with the same drivers in the past and I don't use the wireless, just the cable.

    I hope this helps....
    start-run
    type CMD and hit enter
    then type
    ipconfig / release
    ipconfig / renew
but before that, make sure that you set your IP settings to DHCP

is there any other firewall installed..??

I just tried that and got this message - An error ocured while renewing interface local area connection:unable to contact your dhcp server-request timed out.

    No other firewalls installed.
When you said set IP settings to DHCP, does that mean going into the properties of the network connection and clicking on 'obtain an ip address automatically ' in the tcp/ip box?

which router do you have and the model of ur network card..??
by dhcp i mean that the router itself should be assigning IPs to machines automatically....!! its a setting within the router or modem....

Now you have tried turning off the modem but did you turn off all of the devices at once? A fresh boot for all network devices might help. Meaning turn off your laptop, then the router then the modem and then turn them all back on in reverse order listed.

Also to test internet connection in command prompt type
    Code:
    ping www.google.com
if you get a response then there is somthing else as your lappy is able to contact googles server.

Well then its a problem with your laptop communicating to the network as the other computer on the network is connected fine. At least we know where the problem lies. Now we can narrow it down from their, although I am running out of ideas....

If you have another computer connected via lan to that router....try disconnecting that computer and assign that computer's Network Connection Details such as IP, DNS etc to your computer manually and then try connecting....if it doesnt work, try repairing the connection..!!
and do you have the IEEE 802.1x authentication enabled..??

As you are connected using Ethernet, go to the network adapter in the device manager, what does it says?

Ok, then in the advanced tab of the same adapter window you should find all the options, including the wireless mode in use.

On more question, what is your wireless card?

My ex problem was the same like yours, then I installed Vista, driver for lan card, then Control panel - Network and sharing center - menage network connection - local area connections (properties) - Internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
then call your internet provider, you will get IP's and restart you router and here you go

some (new) lan cards or some with bad drivers just won't work on xp so you have to put vista, and tcpi/pv4 does not exist on xp but some cards need that protocol and thats the problem because that protocol is for vista and there is the part that fix connection and remove that stupid yellow 'low connectivity' thing on tray
