I have an acer aspire 4810tz-4120 for 3 years with no problems, woke up today to find out the LCD screen is gray with colored/white bars appearing on the side. Hooked a cable to an external monitor and it worked fine while the laptop's monitor still remains grayish with the bars. After talking to some online-support it appears to be a hardware failure. I do not know if it is LCD screen that needs to be replaced or the LCD cable to the motherboard.

    Thank you in advance.

I agree that it's most likely one of the components you refereed to although there is still some chance of it being a motherboard failure.
I would start with replacing an LCD cable- while it may not be it (the colors would most likely change if you wiggled the screen) - it's also very cheap to replace and get's rid of one possible cause.
