    Welcome to NBR

We'll need more details about this, like what happens when it tries to start? Blue screen with error code? What's the error code look like? Did you install something right before this error started to appear? Can you access Safe Mode(by pressing F8 during system startup then selecting Safe Mode) and uninstall the last software you've installed?

my wife's acer 5315-2176 laptop won't start up,when you turn it on it says windows is loading files then we get a error message "windows boot manager" windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. to fix the problem:1 insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer. however we do not have the disc.
    file: \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe
    status: Oxc0000001
info: the selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
It is possible that the trouble occurred when upgrading software but I'm not sure which software. not sure how to fix this, will all data be lost?
    Thanks for your time

    Download 'vista recovery disc'.
Google the above and follow the instructions. It allows you to return to a system restore point booting from the CD amongst other things.
