Hey there, I opened up my acer 5920g to replace the thermal paste for the GPU and found the usual gunk used, but it had what looked like a thick rectangular piece of sort of foil between the paste and the GPU core.

should I keep this on when I replace the paste or remove it?

    cheers Alex

If it's a piece of foil with a hole for a core in the middle you should leave it but id it covers the core too you should remove it.

There are no holes in it and it only covers the part with nvidia on it and is exactly the same size as the part with nvidia on it. could it be an attempt at a heatspreader, but it is just a small rectangle of thin metal.

I saw the same thing on my CPU on my acer when i took it apart. I think it's just foil used to deform a little bit to imperfections and conduct heat better. I used a piece of aluminum foil with thermal paste on each side as replacement.
