    hi. on russian site it was said that aspire 1690 may play DVD w/o loading OS.

    how i can do it?? i can't even open dvd-rom if note is turned off

    what they mean is, the laptop will have a little tiny embedded version of linux that can be run instead of your widows. it'll allow you to listen to music cd's at the very least. as to whether they've started installing little linuxes that play DVD's, i've no idea. but the principle would be the same. you'd most likely turn the laptop on and press/hold a key on the keyboard to boot into the linux cd player instead of windows

    As far as I know that feature was for the aspire 202x and not the 169x.
