I dont know what kind of socket type I have or anything so please help. ALSO I HATE VISTA SOOO MUCH so i switched to xp pro, now my wireless drops all of the time, downloaded the driver, still drops. ALSO I Want to run LINUX, i thought it was free??? where can i get it if it is free and whats a good version?

I'll answer just the Linux question: you can get all kind of Linux distros from internet..totally free..you just download the iso, then burn and install. Check the Linux section here in NBR.

any CPU T7700 or below that is a SOCKET P are all equally easy to install..

T5250 is the lowest C2D that will work.... T5450's are very popular and seem to be very good with undervolting *in my experience anyway*

but if i were buying a CPU to put in one of these NOW... i would probably go with the T8100 or T8300... they seem to be thought of as the "BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK"

as far as your network problem goes... what version of the XP driver for the Atheros 5007EG are you currently running??

    try this driver
    http://www.station-drivers.com/tele...xx_760126-760224(www.station-drivers.com).exe

and use this atheros WIFI CLIENT and disable XP wifi zero config option.. let the atheros WIFI client handle all the WIFI config and settings

    http://www.station-drivers.com/tele...u-5.2.0.125-2kxp(www.station-drivers.com).exe
for step by step instructions see the thread near the top of the ACER FORUM

800 mhz FSB... i suggest the T8300 CPU if it's in your price range

just update to the newest BIOS... not sure if they have "officially" released ver 1.42 yet... but if not i can "find" a copy if you have issues w/ 1.40

some people had boot problems... i had to boot twice each morning. but the NEW version fixed that... just not sure if it's been added to ANY public support sites

linux requires a total different mind frame as well as different drivers...

there is one version of linux that reportedly has full hardware support for the 5315 with no need to modify or search for drivers read the 2 BIG acer 5315 threads i have started... i know the info is in one of them

but i never tried to install linux on my laptop....
