You can make sure by looking at the specs; but if it doesn’t have 3 audio jacks or a SPDIF output then the answer is NO.

i have seen a guy connect a 5.1 to a laptop by putting a jack splitter in the audio jack and then connecting 1 in each of them, if i do that will i get the surround effect in 5.1 movies or will the same thing play on all

I'm definitely not an expert but I think the same thing will play on all speakers. You can try it yourself these jacks splitters are very cheap.

Realtek HD Audio sux big time. You'll be better off buying an external 5.1 sound card. And I don't think it supports 5.1 natively (at least in XP).

I had a cheap 5.1 USB adapter which burnt out when I connected to my home theater system. I'm using the USB iMic (3.1), and the sound quality is 10x better than what I get from the 3.5mm jack in front of the notebook.

i tried out m4500 and sbs 300 on my normal card. m4500 sounded very very bad and sbs 300 sounded better. i guess sbs 300 is enough cause my hostel room is 10x10

I agree with Andy, external(usb/expresscard) soundcard FTW. Realtek is just for basic sound. Also, their drivers used to be verry buggy don't know if they fixed it.
