ok so i'm gonna be buying the AS5002WLMI after all my research into a 64bit amd cpu based laptop.
now only problem is that the comp store tells me that this laptop doesn't have an extra battery available for it. and they said that the aspire series dont support removable drive bays.
i went to another comp store that had an aspire 3000 and 3500 on display and from the looks of it the drive bays are removable on those models.
so this brings me to my question. does the AS5002WLMI support a hot-swap battery that can be plugged into the drive bay where the dvd burner is?
or is there another way i can get two batteries working on this laptop to increase the uptime?

Not sure on the 5002, but I know Acer has made other notebooks with a modular drives and never made a modular battery available like the 4502.

The Travelmates have the modular drive bays which allow for a modular battery to be used. The Aspire models should not have the modular ability (switch/latch removed). You may want to check the 3000 & 3500 and make sure it's removable (might look like it is, but isn't). Check to see if the 5002 has a similar switch on the underside from images on the web or from Acer's image gallery (don't know if it's still available).
I just did a check on Acer's Virtual Tour for the 5002 and it seems like it has that option on the underside (Acer MediaBay Release Latch). But then again, who knows if the tour is up-to-date with any changes they may have made to the designs.

would have gone with a travelmate but i dont think they make them with amd64, and i specifically wanted amd64. was gonna go with the ferarri 4005, but parents told me they would kick my ass if i spent that much on a laptop. so i chose the aspire 5002.... now if only i can get an extra battery lol.
i will prolly have to wait until the order get in. and when i have it i'll be able to see what it's got on it.
i emailed acer about this but haven't heard back. when i get it i suppose i'll have to give them a phone call and tell em i wanna add an extra battery to the unit and how to go about doing it. -

well it's official. no drive bay battery is available for aspire series. that really sucks, cus from what i can tell, the aspire 5000 series is the only one other then the ferrari series that has the amd64bit cpu type.
so to get longer lifespan without plugging in, you gotta buy the ferrari series... damnit
well, got my aspire 5002 yesterday, started installing winxp pro 64bit onto it. works fine so far. i guess i'll just have to live with the limited battery life
Thank you for contacting Acer America. The cdrom in this model is integrated and not removeable therefore there is no place to insert a secondary battery. Acer does not offer a docking station or port replicator for the Aspire models. I hope this clarifies.

Nonsense,
The Aspire 5002 may not have the switch to allow quick removal, but I'm sure they just covered it up with the casing. You may be able to just remove one screw for the unit to allow the drive to slide out. You can then get a battery from a silimar Travelmate series and viola! Most optical drives in most notebooks are help in with 1 screw. It's usually either under the unit or right under the keyboard.

yeah i did notice that there are, i think in this case, 2 screws that hold the drive bay in the case. but if they told me that they dont make mediabay batteries for the aspire, should i risk plugging in a travelmate battery into the laptop?
well, actually i could risk it cus i have warranty, it's brand new.
but the problem still remains. who would let me buy a battery if they knew i might purposely break it. or even if they didnt know that. what do i tell them when it doesnt work? some places dont give money back, only trade. so i'd be left with a battery that dont work....
hmm. i'll have to check the net for some good specs on the as5002. but thanks for the idea -
Not a problem, anything you help you save a buck and get what you're after.
You don't actually need to buy it, just go to the store and take a look at the battery and compare it with your interface on your optical drive or in the slot. If it doesn't match, then it's not gonna work for you, but if it does, then it's very possible that this will work. Also, if they have a travelmate there, you may want to even eject the drive and take a look inside and see what it looks like.
