hey guys/gals ive got a slight problem with my laptop. 2-3 months ago i added an addition gig of ram to my acer aspire 3050 for a total of 1.5gbs. it was the correct type of ram(i made sure it was the same as what was already in there). for some reason the computer will recognize that the ram has been placed in the slot but it does use it at all. when i am running programs will it will still draw what's needed from the hard drive even though peak usage rarely surpassed 700mb of ram. was there something i was supposed to activate/adjust after installing the ram?

and another disconcerting thing is that since i installed the ram the fan is on fullblast 100% of the time and the machine heats up almost to the point of overheating really fast even when doing basic things like surfing the web

any idea on what went wrong? thanks for the responses

Try to reseat the RAM, exchange slots too. Try to run the system only with the new stick. Also I'd suggest you to update your BIOS(using your old ram stick and slot)

Does the laptop recognize all the RAM now? Download HWMonitor and post all the temps from it.

the computer always recognized the ram it just kept pulling what was needed off the hard drive

it doesnt seem to be doing it now though

as for temperatures here is the temps over a span of about 7-8 hours. the only program running in the background was utorrent. those temps are even higher than i though

maybe it was just coincedence but the processor started running quite hot around the time i installed the ram which was 2ish months ago

edit: sorry for such a big pic

The temps looks like the laptops is never been clean :D Clean the fan and the heatsink grill, you may try some undervolting too..

    hahaha

this thing has been used and abused and its quite old as well. clean is the last thing is it. although for a very cheap beater notebook it does the job with flair

so undervolting would reduce the current supplied to the notebook which would reduce the amount of power consumption of the processor?? would it have any adverse affects on performance?

When undervolting you can configure "Power Modes". Check The Undervolting Guide for more details. Normally undervolting doesn't cause performance loss[unless configured so(to increase battery life for example)].

Your CPU must support SpeedStep(Intel) or PowerNow!(AMD) to be able to undervolt it.
