honestly though, even though 9k is a lot, i'd get it for just one of a kind type if they had offering HEDT socket cpu and MXM graphics card, and with a bunch of storage spaces available inside of this *empty* space taken up by plastic.
giving something so unique i could justify spending that much, but soldered hardware pretty much killed it for me.

A fair point. I'm not really a novelty buyer so with 9000 I'd probably upgrade my desktop and get a smaller lighter laptop, but I can see the appeal if you want the screen or the exclusive product.Aroc likes this. -

Even with all that cooling, the CPU (which isn't desktop-class) still thermal throttles under heavy load. Very disappointing for a product that costs as much as a decent used car.

Once you get into that range the increase in price to have a desktop class CPU should be a negligible fraction of the price so there's really no excuse for not adding it.BarnacleBill, CaerCadarn, Papusan and 3 others like this. -
it seems to me Acer knowingly made this so impractical, that luggage is ludicrous. A smaller backpack would make it much more suitable for many people. Other than price of course

Yes, but if a 7820HK is thermal throttling, imagine how bad it would have been with a full desktop CPU. This would be inexcusable in a $3,000 machine, but we're talking about something costing three times as much. -
Support.2@XOTIC PC Company Representative
I want to know how they managed to have thermal throttling in a system with that many fans. The GT83VR and GX800VH don't seem to have heating issues with the same level CPU, and they're easily as thick as that with fewer fans.triturbo, Aroc and saturnotaku like this. -

I'm honestly considering buying one. The curved screen turns me on

Not a $9000 turn on for me, but it is pretty sweet to have one in a laptop. -
Nobody got this one yet? C'mon! Just sell off one kidney or two and get this damned machine! We wanna see some reviews over here!

wasnt there a semi-review out which disassembled the machine? tbh its rather underwhelming how they design it's internal if i recall its filled with empty space and plastic, could totally fit way more imho.

$9000USD ? Oh, no. Not home where I live.
Take a look... The Big ACERJOKE X21 being advertised in flyer from the computer store in my area. Only 88,995 NOK = $ 10,475 usd. I get really upset and sad when I see something like this. Tragick.
My wife wondered if this could be true. It was she who showed me this promotional flyer
$10.475USD
And you ain't finish paying. Only 1TB ssd + 1TB HDD. If you pay this price for your GamingBOOK... I expect you will fill up with more storage.

Don't you guys have a lot of extra hidden costs for consumer goods there anyway? I generally expect stuff to cost more on that side of the pond if it isn't made there. -

I watched the Predator 21x video @hmscott linked, too. Other than the BGA processor, it like it alot. I'm struggling to find it $9K-USD-cool. It makes more sense to me at 1/3 to 1/2 that price. The weight and size is sort of a turn on, but not at the asking price.hmscott and hedehede81 like this.

Agreed, $9k is just too much, almost puts it into the "why the heck did you buy that?" category.
It's a step up from the MSI GT83VR which is about $5.5K, and the Asus GX800 is about $6k, so somewhere between $6k-$6.5K would be a fair price.
That large screen and cooling - if effective - would be worth a bit of a premium.
The only other caveat is the totability, it would kinda tough to move around - except for big people like the guy in the video - it almost fits him, even sitting on his lap it looked proportional.
I guess if you bought one at $9k, it's still cool, it's just a bit too ostentatious of a price, the kind of price category you don't want to encourage vendors to pursue.
$3.5k-$4.5k is the sweet spot for the top end flag-ship. Just within range of someone dedicated to save up for it, and not so much that it's no longer an impulse buy

I might just get that GPD Pocket, it kinda seems good for small tasks when I don't want to remove my big laptop from the backpack.

Put a 7700K in it and I'd at least raise an eyebrow. That's probably why they don't put one in though. They know that the people who complain about it being BGA wouldn't buy one either way and so didn't bother. -

Is it actually being marketed as "worlds most powerful laptop"? or do reviewers just don't know better?
The more powerful Clevo P870DM has been out for over 1 year. Less than half the price too. -

It really is a cool laptop though. I like it more each time I see it. I think all of these machines are overpriced though. As much as I love PC gaming, every single thing about it is overpriced. I look at machines like this, or even the AW18 I currently have and I think 3 grand is where they should be. Don't think they are more than 10x's more capable than a console. But PC gaming sucks u in and next thing you know you figuring out how to buy a 9 grand laptop.

That's such a shame! Five fans and probably the worst paste job ever! They even bothered using high quality mayonnaise and took ordinary tooth paste instead....

That's why it's a little disingenuous when you see Pascal advertized as bringing laptops into the desktop range, they never mention how much more you still pay for mobile performance.triturbo likes this. -

I doubt they had you in mind when they designed it, or it would have a 7700K in it.
-
I know. But the Acer 21X is like offering $ 7-9K customized high end desktop build with mainstream low entry i5-7400 along with 1080Ti SLI. Not many would be crazy enough to buy. But there are always somebody out there who buy it anyway if they like the cabinet. The internals like the MB and Cpu will come second.

I think we are thinking about the Acer Predator 21X wrong. Its customers aren't cross-shopping Clevo P870, MSI 16L13, or even Alienware, Razer, or Origin. The Predator 21X (IMO) competes against cigar boats, Ferraris, Audimar, and Wilson Audio.

Pretty much a version of what I was saying, if you're bringing practicality into an argument about whether or not to buy this, you aren't part of the target audience.Aroc likes this. -

This laptop is like a Ford GT, an exotic product from a mainstream company. You're not completely sure why it exists, but you sure are glad it does.

acer didn't use mxm gpus or socketed cpu? Why?

Just look at the brand name, It's Acer!! And yeah, it's marketing. Only 300/400 units will be sold. Mind you, Limited Edition.

yes, they made a lot of marketing with these youtubers
I could buy a P870km1 or a GT83VR for less so may be the extra costs are explained by this big luggage
That is a really waste of money
