just got an aspire 5100. got it as a display model from a store so i missed
out on some of the peripherals which leaves me with some very basic
    questions.

i'd like to put linux on the macvhine but want to keep the ability to restore
to the factory default. tried a restore by booting to the restore partition,
partition 0 on the drive, and that seems to work.

i also made a couple of backup dvd's from the erecovery utility; chose the
option for factory defaults and burned. seemed to fill one dvd and put a small
    amount on the second.

    finally to the question:

if i were to wipe the disk completely and install linux, how would i later use
these disks to restore the factory setup? do i just boot to the dvd drive with
    the disk in it?

also, can someone point me to a link on any battery calibration
    procedures?

    thanks,
    BabaG

Yes, as long as you made those 2 dvds, you can put anything on ur hard drive and you will still be able to boot off them and restore it to its original state. Heck, you can even get a new hard drive like I did and still be able to use the restore disks
