What's that one piece of Acer's preloaded "empowering" software that uses the sensor under the harddrive to detect movement and try to prevent damage? It also has an alarm if anyone moves your laptop.

Okay I found it. My stock HDD failed, hopefully this will offer some more protection... does it really work?

Not sure. I used to think that the G-sensor was causing the clicking of my hard drive (causing temporary freezes since it sounded like the read head either parked itself or hit against something), but I still get it on occasion without it installed. The software might have exaceberated it, but I have no way of being sure.

Anyway, theoretically it's supposed to detect sudden drops of the notebook and spin down the hard drive to prevent damage. I've never actually purposely tested this.

It doesn't spin down the drive but disables write current to the head so if any shock causes the head to skate across the drive the write current won't be on to overwrite any data.

If i handle my machine a little roughly, a bubble pops up informing me of the detected shock and that the drive is disabled, then a second later it informs me that the drive is enabled again. Seems to work.

Ya, i have always had that Well, i call it the head parking sound on my 8204. Doesn't happen all the time, and my system doesn't freeze when it happens. It's all a mystery.
