I just sent back my AS1410 because the trackpad buttons stopped working.

Received a voicemail that my unit has damage not covered by the standard warranty and the upper and lower case need to be replaced at a cost of $199. That's half the cost of the dang laptop!

What gives? Is there someone to argue on this front that the standard warranty should cover the trackpad?

I would assume that you are being told that the type of damage to your unit is not the kind covered by a warranty. I would think the operative word here is damage. I would email back and ask for a detailed explaination.

Good thoughts, now the challenge has been getting someone on the phone who can actually give that explanation...

    They'll probably say liquid damage.

I bet you 1 rep point.
