    Hi.

A week ago i bought an Acer Travelmate 8571 with Linus. I installed legal WinXP with SP3 and latest drivers/updates.

After start the computer freezes within 10-20 minutes independently on the running programs. To reboot it one has to use the Power button.

This is not the overheating: the ventilator works and the air temperature is cool. I guess, it can be either problem of the BIOS (v.1.02), which is not able to work with XP, or a wrong installation of the XP.

Does anyone have an idea on the source of the trouble? I would like to keep the notebook due to the advantages of extremely low noise production and long accumulator working time.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I just what to say that I see the same problem with my travelmate 8571 running Vista.

I am currently in contact with Acer support in Denmark. There first suggestion was to restore the system.

I have tried this but did not have the time to test it yet.

I will post a message here if I find a solution for the problem

    Best regards
    Soeren

    Hej,

I've tried to disable the WLAN card in the device manager to see if this would solved the freeze problem.

I have streamed video from the internet for 24 hours over the ethernet cable without the computer freezing.

After enabling the WLAN card again the freeze problen has disappeared!
I can't explain why but you could give it a try.

    Best regard
    Soeren

I sent the notebook back and ordered a new one. New one works without a problem: OS installation, programms, work. Looks like the reason for freezing was in hardware of the single machine.

P.S. Still no answer from Acer Support Service

I have 2x Timeline 8471, one working perfectly, the other freezing after a few minuts.

I tried with a Ubuntu 9.10 livecd, and no problems there!

I'm now trying to deactive the wifi, to see if it makes a difference.

I have noticed that acer recently has updated the bios to v.1.24 and the fingerprint driver (20091030). Maybe they are the reason for this freeze?

Will try them if the deactivation/reactivation of the wifi doesnt work.

Deactivating the wifi works as long its deactived. When reactivating it it still freezes.

    But...

updating bios from 1.02 to 1.24 works for me.
