Is there a way to add a 2nd hd to an acer TM8000?
Having a problem with the main HD. If I can get another and add it as a 2nd hd. I can get my files and folder recovered from it.

Already tried an adapter for my PC as a slave, jumpered it to be a slave, etc. PC won't even boot with it attached..

    Thank you,
    Wayne

    An external?

You can put a any HD into an enclosure and that makes it a portable HD.

Yep the beauty of that solution is

    1) connectivity choices Firewire or USB
    2) can use that Drive as an external backup for all your machines (if you have more than one )
    3) Portable - goes with you

It does not have to be an Notebook HD (2.5 inch) unless you are looking to tranfer all your files to a new HD - if that is the case there are drive kits you can purchase with the drive that will have the necessary euipment to transfer.

    Good luck.............dy

    to moderator coriolis: cute!

daadon: Thanks for the suggestion. However, I probably wasn't clear.

I can't get my tm8000 to boot to windows xp, can't use my oem full xp cd to just reinstall the op system, since the file system wasn't nfts in the 1st place. probably fat32.
sooooo... I need tto find a way to add a 2nd hd to plug into my tm8000, 'recover' the op system with the garbage i got from acer, put the old hd into a carrier that plugs into the extra drive bay on the TM8000 and recover my data files to cd or something (no floppy).
Hence the question about how to add a 2nd drive to my laptop...
Thanks for the reply, sorry I wasn't more clear for both of you.

ok unbootable drive - I suppose it depends on what you have to accomplish - repair existing drive so Windows will boot or just have the ability to retireve your data files from that drive then you could re-install ...

I don't suppose you have some Emergency Repair disks ?
If you change you BIOS settings to boot fromn CD , you should be able to boot from the OEM cd and try a Repair option ?
Have you tired booting into Windows safe mode (press F8 key after bios dispay)

If data receovery is your main concern then :
If the bios supports CD booting (I am prety sure it will) you could create a bootable cd BARTPE
    http://www.bootcd.us/BartPE_Plugins_Repository.php
see if you can see the drive then - perahps be able to offload some of the files to an external drive with that tool assuming bootable CD can see the drive
Various Linux Distros that will run from CD may be able to create one boot this then offload some of you data files ...

Of ocurse all this creating bootle CD's is assuming you have another computer at your disposal ..... if not then maybe go to a friends place (remove your dirve and get a 2.5 external dirve kit) and slave it off the Friends machine -then see if you can at least retrieve your user data

Don't suppose Acer support is any help (assuming there is some warrenty left)

    good luck -

a VERY extensive reply! Thank you!!!

re: ok unbootable drive - I suppose it depends on what you have to accomplish - repair existing drive so Windows will boot or just have the ability to retireve your data files from that drive then you could re-install ...

    Totally unbootable to WIN XP.

re:I don't suppose you have some Emergency Repair disks ?

Yes, I can boot using the win98 recovery disk, hit a ctrl c, and get to dos. I have all the acer recovery cds and a full oem win XP Prof.

re:Have you tired booting into Windows safe mode (press F8 key after bios dispay)

Does not get that far. No windows boot at all....
get an error "PCI parity error on bus/device/function 00F0h"
googling gets me pretty much nothing...

AH, That is something to try! thnaks!

I have tried to use an adapter and hook up the notebook drive to my PC on the 2ndy IDE channel. My pc 'sees' the hd, knows the right type & model, but asks if i want to format it when I try to access it...
    The acer HD are in 3 parts, a C:, D;, and a tech/ drive.
The D; is 10 gig. I am writing my important files to it in the hopes that when I format c: again, the d; will stay untouched.
BUT am going to try your suggestion 1st!
And yes, I have a pc hooked to LAN to internet to help w all this...

    Any particular files???

re :Don't suppose Acer support is any help (assuming there is some warrenty left)
HAH! I bought the 3 year warranty (2 yr add-on), they sent me a card. didn't read the fine print. You have to activate it for it to be any good. Since I got the system 7/2/04, guess what? "standard $495. restore to original specs charge for out of warranty. when I bought the IBM it was all automatic...

    re:good luck -

    :->

Many thanks for the web site referral. I'll feel better if I can get my files off the hd to *anything*.
Most of my stuff for customer data is on the big computer and I sync it to the PDA, so i'm down about 10% of info if I lose the hd - and about 20 hours of restructuring...
Also, ran Norton ghost 9.0. to try and back up the files on c:
It shows it is there, but can't access the data. Volume name is garbled
Hey! Once I get the data files backed up to the D: on the disk, I'll see if norton ghost can back up *those* files... it may take a while, but this could work out....
    Hey, thanks!
Will also try the BARTPE site, thanks!

Your PE drive suggestion led me to buy and download a pre-made pe disk XP Live CD. All the work done, saved me hours.

Still had to boot to win98, xfer files by dos commands to the D drive, then boot with th XP Live CD and use a usb drive to copy files from D. (C was not recognized by the XP Live CD OR my PC)
So far, got most of the files I need over.
Now looking for my outlook express emails and I am done!
Stil about 20 hours of reconstrcution, but I will at least have the files.
After this am buying a portabl firewire DVD writer and backing that sucker up every week to dvd!

Thanks very much for your help. You saved my can!!!
