My 3810TZ should be here tomorrow and I plan on not using the pre-installed vista OS but rather moving right to 64bit Windows 7. I believe I have read a few posts where people have installed Windows 7 with no problems (with drivers or otherwise) but I just wanted to start this thread to get a better feel for how many people are running it and how common problems are (esp with regards to installation or drivers).

So post up, are you running windows7 on your timeline? What has your experience been?

did you install from an external DVD drive or from a USB stick? I am hoping to do the latter as I do not have the former :)

My 3810 was scheduled for delivery today but UPS is running a day late (grr...). I plan to reformat with Windows 7 x64 after taking a look at the Acer Vista image once. There's a chance that the computer cannot boot from an external DVD drive (not all bios' can), and the USB stick method is reportedly much faster than using a DVD.

If you do not currently have a 64bit computer from which to execute the 64bit version of bootsect.exe, don't worry about using the 32bit version of bootsect.exe and the rest of the 64bit installation image. It should work.

Win 7 RC is much better than Vista and even XP.

It runs cooler and longer on same battery..

Installing 7 RTM right now, hope to have no troubles with drivers and all.

For those who've already been down this road: did you need to install any software for the Fn keys? And what OS's version of the Leafy Button software did you use from Acer's website? I'm guessing Vista x64

    Thanks.

ah...if you have to reinstall every 30 days that wont due since I wll be on the road for the next ~40 days. I would probably be better off with RC and then just apply my free copy (from acer) when i get back. Is RC that buggy? The few people I know who have used it havent mentioned any problems.

@slug: you don't have to reinstall every 30 days, you only have to enter a console command to reset the 30 day clock using a totally legal built-in software provided by MS.

Windows 7 automatically installed all drivers. Just had to grab Acer's ePower from their site. But I don't know how to make my Leafy button work?

You either pay for access to it now (Technet, MSDNAA, ect.), order an upgrade disk, or wait for the Oct 22 release.

Hey guys I'm running 7 on my 3810TZ but I can't seem to figure out these 2 issues:

    1. the microphone picks up a fraction of a second of noise when first initialized (by checking sound settings, Skype audio settings) then doesn't receive any input at all even though drivers are installed correctly.

    2. I can't get the Leafy button to work even after installing ePower management.

    Thanks.

OK I restored to the original Vista install and am still having the same microphone problem. Drivers are installed correctly and device manager properties say it's working fine.

I'm assuming it's some kind of one-off defect because I haven't heard of this from other Timeline owners.

EDIT: now it's taking forever to shut down, goes blank and is silent. Power button starts flashing orange, pushing it turns it back on from sleeping or w/e it was doing, and continues to say "Logging off" with no result. lol this one's definitely going back.

I installed Windows 7 Pro (x64) from an iAudio X5 set up as a "bootable USB key." The install is working perfectly, but I made the mistake of thinking that setup was asking for drivers for AHCI mode, but in fact the message on the X5 indicated that setup had sent a "Safe to Disconnect" signal to the X5 and the lack of drivers was due to the disconnected install media. I plan to reformat after switching to AHCI mode knowing that I need to unplug and reconnect the X5 every time that happens.

In windows 7, everything looks fine. The screen brightness oscillates with the Windows Update version of the graphics driver, but installing the (older) Acer-downloaded driver fixes this issue.

The battery meter seems to report 6 hours or so; more updates on this with more testing.

My experience with Windows 7 on netbooks was quite good. So when I read another article I decided to join the madness and got a copy of Windows 7 RTM off of Bittorrent (the second copy I downloaded had the correct MD5 checksums as posted on the Windows 7 blog). I backed up my data and ran the installer. I have the 3810TZ with 64-bit Vista Home Premium on the latest 1.10 BIOS. The installer complained about OneCare and I uninstalled that and the install ran for more than an hour without problems.

My machine has a bunch of software installed now - Lightroom, Office 2008, Compilers, Skype, etc. I tried to keep the drivers up to date, and things ran pretty smooth on Vista.

Booting up and logging on does take longer for me now on W7. And then, a couple hours after upgrading, I got a whole bunch of error messages about NTFS file system corruption. And yes, I did have some corrupted files. One git archive was damaged, the defragmenter didn't run any more. I reinstalled the Intel Windows 7 RC 64 bit graphics and matrix manager, but then I got a blue screen while booting - ntsys.dll (the windows kernel!) was damaged. W7 repaired the problem on the next boot. The system seems to run fine now, but maybe I had a hard disk problem coincide with the upgrade to W7. Strange though.

I hope that it was a driver problem, and that Intel will come up with streamlined drivers soon.

I think my problem is a hardware problem I see error messages like "The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period." or "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0" and bootup and shutdown take quite long. Acer support is doing the usual crap service - reinstall to factory settings! This will cost me a whole day and prove that it's a hardware error.

The easiest way to check for that would be to buy a new harddisk and bit-copy the old HD onto it. If that cures it, the HDD is bad. How hard is it to get the HDD out?

My problems are solved for now. I did reinstall from the OEM partition into Vista Home Premium 64 as instructed by support. I verified that I don't have a 100% CPU issue there. So I installed Windows 7 from scratch (with a memory stick). I subsequently installed some Acer programs, the video driver was already current from Windows 7 - it came via Windows Update.
Then I installed the Intel Matrix Manager (latest) from the intel website. And then I experienced a long wait while booting - the system just totally stands still, not even the CAPS LOCK key lights up any more (external keyboard).
I uninstalled that driver and since then things seem to work fine.
