A word or two of warning.
if you have a bios password enabled, (I for some reason decided this morning to enable them all[)])
when my laptop went into hibernate mode because I didn't get the ac mains power supply connected quickly enough
it will not boot up past the bios password screen.
It will not allow me to type in a password at the prompt, almost as if the keyboard is not connected.
Anyone got any ideas how to get around the problem.
I've already tried to strip it down to get at the cmos battery but have not been able to get the back
completly off to access the mobo. Can't get to the screws under the hinge.
Does anyone know how to get it apart[?][?][?]
    or how to fix it.
Just I don't really want to take it back to the dealers if I can fix it myself.

    No one got any ideas??

Oh well time to get my screw driver out and have another go at getting the back off again.........

btw I did find a utility to clear the cmos/bios with a boot disc that can be used via usb floppy.

here is were I found it with more aspire 1800 series utilities,

    http://csd.acer.com.tw/SI/Download2.nsf/1815c7c6f8aff65d48256bdd0035cffd/6286e69610c1a78c48256f170031e2b2?OpenDocument

may have to buy a usb floppy tomorrow if I can't do it via hardware reset.

    LOL [ :D][ :)][8D] LOL

Feel like an idiot talking to myself but I've managed to fix it.
I could have possibly sent it back to ACER for a warranty claim but I didn't want to be without it for any length of time[ ;)]
I found out a few interesting things while stripping it down,
The cpu (3.2 gig) is one of those newer designs without the pins on the chip.
The ati x600 hardware is not upgradable as it is NOT on a seperate card.
The LCD screen is made by samsung.
There is no way to put the hard drive and dvd/cdrom on seperate cables as they fit directly to the motherboard.
I took a few pics with my digicam if anyone is interested.

If anyone has the same bios/cmos problem you don't need to strip your machine as the cmos battery can be got at from the ram cover on the underside. it's to the left lower side of the ram and you may be able to short it out from there. (DON'T BLAME ME IF YOU KILL YOUR MACHINE)

    Tiggr_r1,

Congrats on getting the problem fixed. I just saw your post today after being off for a few days. You might not have had to reset the BIOS the way you did. On my old Toshiba, when enabling a BIOS password and getting back into the system after a Hibernate/Standby mode, the screen will stay black (backlight comes on, but no text). At this point, just type the password (as you would if you saw something) and hit enter, your system should let you back in. This is a "protection" feature that may also be in the Acer units.

Thanks for the info Venombite but the bios password screen came up as normal and just would not take any input as if the keyboard was locked or disconnected. After clearing the cmos I still had to put the bios password back in to access the hard drive because I was still locked out of that. Thankfully it all worked fine.
Despite all of this I stillhave to say that I'm very happy with the laptop.

Sorry to say markiet that the ram is also soldered onto the mainboard .
I'd post some pics if I knew how,
Admins, can they be posted here or do I have to have them hosted on another site.
It would be easier if I could add them to my messages, can that be done via html?
If so how? and is there a limit to size due to bandwidth limitations?

O la tigg_r1! Me again... I was just thinking, if you know how to 'repair' this error I've got...

I don't seem to be able to get my Windows Media Player working... Is there any tips? It says, "An internal application error has occurred"...

Like, I'm so frustrated now... So, what's the good news I'd like to hear? :)

    Hi jillyann
All I can tink to suggest is that you reinstall windows media player or if you haven't already done so update it to version10 via the windows update site.

I've had exactly the same problem with my Aspire 1672 only I sent the laptop back for repairs 3 times now!

Each time they have denied knowing about any bugs and found a "faulty motherboard" and replaced... they obviously should have just read this forum!

My laptop is with them now, I may well ring them up and pass on your experience.

Thanks, glad to know mine isn't the only one with trouble - I was beginning to think it just didn't like the password I used ;o)

If your notebook is locked up and you cannot type in anything to get past the BIOS password then you will need to update your BIOS. Acer released a fix for this (S3 resume bug) the other month. I had this problem and after updating the BIOS everything worked well...

lol - you would have thought that after installing 2 new motherboards they would have updated the BIOS too for me. lol. Mind you there are no BIOS updates, drivers or anything for the 1672 - in fact it's almost as if it doesn't exist so I'm kinda stuck on that front [xx(]

Same problem, it such a nice laptop and to have an idiotic problem happen it's just like acer. I hesitated to buy an acer laptop until I found someone who had one. Their desktops are crap and I was worried that the laptops would be the same. The hardware specs are excellent but quality usually lacks. This laptop has been incredible except for this problem, being on the road 100% of the time, I make me living with this and cant take a chance with crap laptops. my last 5 have been sony's without problem, before that it was IBM (Crap, toshiba, crap and hp being so so)

so I appreciate you finding the fix and look forward to not finding any more "features" with this laptop

FYI - This is an acer 1800 series.

    Scott.
