hello, I have the same problem with my Aspire 5602. However, someone suggested that i download the bluetooth driver and software from global.acer.com. I'm yet to see if it will work

hiya penguin1 ,let me know how u get on..

the reason it says no device is because you do not have any bluetooth devices near connection range (or it has not been configured for it yet). The easiest way to see if you have bluetooth hooked up correctly is to first be on A/C power and have all computer components turned ok.
Once you can verify that bluetooth is turned on go into your device manager (start ----> run ----> devmgmt.msc )
You should see blue tooth devices as an option (everything is alphabitized). If you see it, it's functioning correctly. Just make sure you use the correct software on your acer to hook up the device properly (also make sure that your device has bluetooth enabled as well).

Hi Welshgirl,
The reason your bluetooth doesn't work it that I'm afraid the 5044 doesn't have bluetooth built in. I have 2 acer laptops (one a 5044) and both have bluetooth buttons. Unfortunately, both model don't come with bluetooth and the button is simply there for the higher models which share the small chassis.
So i'm afraid, the 5044 doesn't come with a bluetooth device. I'm not sure its ungradeable by acer, but you could always buy a bluetooth USB dongle if you really need it.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Wayne. -
hi wayne, i just recieved an email back from acer customer services today and they said the same...im not really worried about it being upgradeable as ive already got a bluetooth dongle, but it does seems silly to have the button there for no reason..thanks anyway

Hi Bev,
No probs, glad to help!

hi wayne how long have u had your 5044 and how are u finding it ?
-
Hiya Bev,
I've got my 5044 on Monday, so I'm still really just installing stuff. Up to press, I'm very impressed! For £399 you really can't go wrong! I've benchmarked it in comparision with my other Laptop (Pentium 4 2.9ghz desktop replacement) and on almost all benchmarks the 5044 came out better!
One strange thing was I bought 2 5044 at the same time, one for me and one for my father. Strangely, one 5044 came with a 1.8ghz Turion processor (the correct processor for spec), but one came with a 2.0ghz Turion. It must have been a cock up in production. Anyway, guess who's getting the 2.0ghz one
Another thing I noticed was that one of the machine DVD writing was a lot slower. I tracked it down to the secondary IDE controller (the one thats connected to the DVD) was set as PIO mode and not DMA mode 2. I deleted the secondary controller and hey presto, the drive was much faster. Funny how 2 identical machines can be so different!
I've checked with acer for new driver, bios updates and as usual Acer's website is well out of date. My 5044 has bios verion 1.05, acers website only lists 1.03......my machine is more up to date than their website????
So how you finding it?
Cheers,
Wayne. -
I found this site while googling for an answer to Bev's exact question. I did not think the 5044 had bluetooth but the manual talks about it and the button was there. Glad I found this site as I won't waste any more time looking for the non-existant bluetooth.
Like Wayne, I have only had limited time with the machine but from what I have seen so far, I am pleased. The only complaint so far was the inclusion of Norton, which I have removed. From what i had read, I had expected removal to be more difficult but going to control panel and using add/remove program seems to have worked OK. Perhaps removal difficulties relate to older versions of Norton? Speed is fine and the wireless connection has been very good and reliable. Also, having DVD-RAM support is a big plus.
I cannot make up my mind about the screen yet. Colours vary considerably as you change your angle of view and I spend a lot of time adjusting the angle of the screen.
Current opinion is the machine is a bargain. -
hi wayne ive had mine for about 2 weeks and i just love it, d but i was dissaponted that a good portion of my 80gig h/d was taken up by the elusive hidden partition..i would rather have had the choice of setting this up myself..i definately would have preferred to have the software on a disk rather than that pre-installed .maybe one day will do a clean format and free up the space .but will see how it goes for now..so wayne .does your dad know your going to nick his faster laptop???lol
-
Yeah, me too. Don't know why they partition it to a C and D either rather than just one big C. Daft! When I got my other laptop (Acer 1801wlmi), that was also partitioned the same. I zapped that straight away and formatted it as one partitioning and also installed XP professional rather than home. Not as bothered with the 5044, its primarily gonna be used as a downstairs machine (lazy I know), so I'm not as fussed.
I suppose the no CD thing is to keep costs down, but whos complaining at £399
MMmm, not sure my Dad will ever know that one laptop was faster, LOL
Anyway, keep in touch, its always nice to know other owners. We can share any interesting bits we find etc. PM me if you like

hiya wayne,
so have u found any interesting bits about your laptop u would like to share yet ?? lol..im getting bored with all that pre-installed stuff that came with it,what do u think i should get rid of first ?do i really need all those cd /dvd creators ? empowering technology thingie i never use, catalyst control centre maybe ? . and as far as cost cutting is concerned i feel cheated there was no disk ,for £399 quid i want it all .including.bells , whistles, knobs etc lol

Hiya Bev,
The stuff that comes with it isn't bad. Norton's a PITA so you could get rid of that, but I would leave the empowering stuff and definately ATI catalyst centre, especially if you want to play games. I still need to check for newer drivers. You can check here:
ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/
Still digging around for stuff. I did well with my other laptop, I managed to find a driver that made the non dual layer DVD writer into a dual layer drive! Well worth the firmware upgrade! The 5044 already is dual layer, so no probs there.
I'll let you know if I find anything worth noting.
Cheers,
Wayne.
