Recently, within the last couple of days, I have had my aspire 5538 suddenly shut down without warning and the left front bottom of the notebook near the vent was hot. I am assuming it shutdown because of the heat, but I can't deduce the cause of it. It happened three times in the last week and in the second instance there was a blue screen with a system dump and error message. Recently my daughter and I had been working on some video files and I thought that might have had some affect with regards to this hot side issue. Any thoughts or advice on the issue is appreciated.

Use software like HWMonitor or RealTemp to measure actual temperatures.
If you guys have been doing some heavy video editing/converting which is very CPU intensive than it's entirely possible that it's overheating.
That said BSOD may indicate other issue(s) as it's usually what usually happens when a unit overheats.

Measure the temps when idle & under load and report back.
