I recently (i.e. a few minutes ago) flashed my bios to the one available for a vista upgrade. Having said that, I've noticed that now the LCD screen seems to whine when it is turned on!

    Perhaps a better explanation:

When I use FN-F6 (the command that turns on/off the lcd) the extremely high pitched whining goes away. When I press it again (i.e. turn the lcd back on) the whining returns!

I'm not sure if this is due to the the bios flash or not, but this is definitely the first time I have noticed it. Any ideas? I've tried changing my screen resolution to no avail - I can't seem to be able to change my refresh rate

I've searched all over, but haven't found anyone else with the same problem as me. (or is this a common occurance that I've just never noticed before) Can anyone shed some light on the situation?

    Cheers

The first thing I would do is reinstall the bios but then turn off the computer in the middle of the reinstallation. This will confuse the bios and make the screen work better without all the whine.

where do you slack-jawe'ed people get these crazy solutions to pc problems? Tommy5 that is just stupid and not to mention horrible advice. If you have nothing positive to say then just don't reply at all. If you have no experience in this area keep your incompetence to yourself.

jtcl, if you are having problems with your lcd making noises it is probally the inverter going out or the backlight having issues.

Like SSX4life said tommy5 ARE U MAD!!!?? Don't ever tell someone to turn off their computer during a Bios flash that will completely screw up a computer and render it unusable until the person gets the Bios eprom chip reprogrammed at a computer store a major inconvenience for any user.

I also agree with SSX4life most of the times buzzing sounds with the LCD are caused by faulty LCD inverters...

If you can't give usable help don't say anything please we are trying to help people here. I hope the original poster did not try your suggestion and I hope SSX4life got through in time.

Tommy5 I really should report your post to the mods here, for giving a unsuspecting computer user who just came here for help such rubbish advice that will endanger his computer in a massive way...

I am thinking about reflashing my bios (but obviously not turning off the computer half-way through) but now that I think about it, it is likely a hardware fault. Pretty sure my laptop is out of warranty now, but I might give Acer a call and see what they have to say about it.

People please see the other previous posts by this person and NEVER heed any of his advise. It seems his sole purpose is to destroy the integrity of all those that try so hard to help on this forum. His gives childish, misinformed and blatently misleading answers to things he knows nothing about. Or does.... Maybe he wants users to purposely destroy their equipment to give him some kind of self gratification by misleading them with his concocted help. A sick mind indeed.

hmm can't seem to find the edit button. Anyway, regarding the inverter, is there any way of checking it without opening up the laptop?

And as for reverting my bios to a backup that was made by winphlash (bios.bak) how do i go about doing it?

I am glad SSX4life caught tommy5 post in time so you have not damaged anything. I can't help with your problem but I am sure other members out there will give you sensible advise. Good luck.

Hi, I have had what I believe is the same problem with a whining screen although I experienced this on a Gigabyte W511A notebook. The whining seems to stop while screen updates are in progress, but with no screen activity, it is audible again.

I would like to know what graphics / screen card your notebook is using?

Mine is a ATI mobility X700. Eventually my screen went dead and after consulting my supplier, he advised I replace the mother board as the card is on board. After the new mother board was installed I had a quite again - for about 3 months. Alas, the whine is back - I fear another failure is eminient.

Any feedback would be appreciated - I always had a suspision that my supplier replaced the wrong part... (And charged me too)

    Regards
    Rob
