I have a major problem with my Aspire 3100. Sometimes when i start my laptop, no matter what hard drive i use, it will detect it the brand name fine but the model number is a bunch of jumbled characters. The only thing is, it happens randomly. And when it does happen, I can't do anything with the disk at all, but when it does work, any data that is put on the disk will be corrupted when I restart. Anybody have any clue what's going wrong? btw, the laptop is only 3 months old.

Sounds like the hard drive is dying. You should call Acer and have them replace it for you.
