    hi !
I desperately need to switch to an external monitor
because my acer 1692wmi screen is not working properly
    (no backlight).
I tried to press Fn+F5 to switch to an external monitor
connected to the vga output but it doesn't work.
Do I need to instll a driver or something to make those key work?
    Please help !!!

Nope, it should work without any driver installed whatsoever..Don't know what might be the reason really..

I finally managed to switch to an external monitor.
But now I have another problem. Hard disk is too slow.
I mean it's really really slow. It takes about 5 mins to
transfer a 200 mb file from one prtition to another.
    What's happening?

well I think the hd is dead. I re installed everything on a new hd and
    everything is fine.
BUT there's one annoying thing...the fan is always ON.
Is it normal ? Even when I try the various power saving features, it is always on.

no that is NOT normal... have you ever opened the laptop up and cleaned the FAN and heat transfer fins???

you might want to consider upgrading the BIOS as well

I have opened the laptop and cleaned very carefully the fan,the heatsink

    and the vents

    The fan is activated

a few minutes after windows starts then stays always on.

I have even flashed the motherboard with the latest bios

but it doesn't make any difference.

    It drives me mad.

I think about buying a fanless laptop mat like this :

Is it useful or just placebo?

since the acers tend to pull fresh air in thru the bottom,, it's my belief that that type of mat would be a very bad idea...

now for a MACBOOK or some laptop that doesn't pull the fresh air up thru the bottom it might be a good thing....... but i see it causing an even more serious problem than you have now... but that's just my oppinion.

i use a cooling pad for my acer and with out it the ram and HDD get very hot to the right of the touchpad.
a cooling pad working correctly will stop the cpu from getting hot but, some cooling pads can make as much noise as the cpu fan.
but i would still recommend using one as they can increase the life of your laptop.
    good luck,
    Phil :D

PS. if you sort out your problem please post back here.
as what you do/find could help others.

see the "PAD" he is thinking about... it's not a cooler... and has no FANS

it's a pad that is ment to soak up heat and transfer it away passivly and would end up BLOCKING ALL AIR VENTS... thus screwing his system up very badly
