My 1681 should arrive next week. Before I bought it on ebay I asked the seller if it came with a card reader option build in and was told it did. Now I've checked the specs of the LT on Acer's US and Canada website but they don't list it as having a card reader built in. The US site mentions it as an option.

Those of you that have the 1681 did you get it with the build in card reader? This is one of the important items I wanted in a LT so I can take my SD cards and plug them in to check out pics that I take with my camera if I was on a trip let's say.

The other Acer sites in different parts of the world mentions that the 1681 comes with a card reader built in.

I won't be a happy camper if my LT shows up missing a card reader in it.

It may not indicate this on their site, but if you take a look at the photos for the 1681 on the Canadian site, it clearly shows that the unit has a card reader on the right of the unit.

thanks VB, yes I just happened to take a look at the pics on the canadian site (looked at pics on the US and other worldwide sites before) and saw the card reader area too so I should be good in that regard.

According to the seller that I've been in contact with all this past week, the LT will be shipped today just in time for me to pick it up in Buffalo at my friend's place. I can't wait to get it in my hot little hands!!!! [ :D][ :D]

BTW VB, in what part of Ontario are you from?

Same as you, in the big T.O.

When you cross the border, I don't know if there will be trouble in getting the unit over. Especially if you leave it in the box. They may see it and tax you for purchasing/importing stuff from the US. You may want to try to put it into a notebook bag and bring it back without the box. Have your buddy hold onto the box. This way, you can say it was something you brought over from Canada to do a bit of work while in the US. Make sure you extract the OS and install some apps, this will first test the system to make sure it works and second, it'll be a good backup if customs asks you to turn the unit on. Don't want the OS to start installing when you turn it on, since it was supposed to be for work.

Thanks VB, I don't mind paying a bit of tax when I bring it back. I prefer to bring the whole package back with me. The seller has provided me an invoice for the laptop (between you and me with an amount less than what I actually paid for it) [ :p] so I'll declare that amount. When I'm over I'm going to be doing some shopping anyways so I could be returning with a bunch of things (non-computer related). I'll be there the whole weekend so I will actually be allowed an exemption to bring some stuff back duty and tax free.

Couple of things, I d/loaded the user guide from the Canadian site for my 1681 last night and was looking it over. It mentions the unit as having Stereo speakers and under specifications it does list an 8 cell battery as avail. I've been reading all these posts about people trying to find out if there is an 8 cell battery that will work so I can say yes there is one avail. It still doesn't list a part # or anything for the battery but give your local Acer dealer a ring and get them to locate the # for an 8 cell battery for your 1681.

They have a job and get paid for a reason, there's no need for people like us to run around trying to find out this stuff. This is something they should be doing if they want to make a sale. They should work and do their jobs if they want to sell computers and their parts. I know I'm not here to do their jobs for them and I wouldn't expect a customer of mine to do my job. If I did all the searching and hunting around for a laptop battery for my 1681 I should be getting it for free.

    a minor vent......[} :)]

The 1680 series does have an 8 cell option, it's standard on the Asian/European models only. They may list the part#, but I don't think you can get it in Canada. The battery for a 4000 series should be the same since it utilizes the same design. That has an 8 cell battery and will give the 5hrs of approx runtime. Well, you know what they say, "If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself". The shops will probably do a poor job in finding the part for you, in the end it'll probably be the wrong part. You'll probably wish you actually did the research/running around at the end, it would have been cheaper and less stressful. [ ;)] IMHO.
