there are a few things here that I'm unsure about.
one is PLFSet...what is this? google turns up nothing I can read...
also, there is NvCpl.dll,NvStartup, which is a valid program that has something to do with an nVidia chipset and should be on if you're overclocking. it somewhat confuses me as unless it's referring to the 8600M GT, I have an Intel GM965...which is what causes me the confusion. does this need to be there or should I remove it?
then, last but not least, there's some Intel RAID manager. why would my laptop have a RAID manager in the startup? or does it have something to so with the 250GB HDD installed? or can I remove it without suffering any consequences?![]()

Your HDD work @ AHCI mode & Intel RAID manager A.K.A Intel Matrix storage manager comes with AHCI driver. It can be uninstall ,but make sure to install latest intel Matrix driver first(overwrite) & then perform uninstall .
Ohhh...BTW you need nvidia drivers -
yeh, I gathered the nVidia was important, being I have the graphics card...dawned on me later it probably has to do with the nV control panel or something.
what about PLFSet tho???
edit - btw, as for the Intel RAID controller, I don't care if it's installed. safe to remove it from my startup tho? that's all I'm wondering about... -
A basic rule of thumb is that EVERYTHING is 'safe' to remove from Startup, if we're talking about the Startup tab in MSConfig. A fresh Windows install has nothing there; as drivers, applications, and tools are installed, more and more is added. Manufacturers want you to have quick access to features, or want their dll's pre-loaded into memory so it appears they run faster when starting. I've yet to find a single item in Startup that is essential to Windows or stops it from booting. Remember, Startup items load after Windows has booted successfully.
A lot of the computers I clean up for customers are so slow I do the reverse test:
1. Uncheck everything in the Startup tab. Reboot.
2. See if they're missing anything on the desktop that they want back (a certain toolbar or system tray icon). If so, go enable just those certain applications. Reboot. Repeat as needed.
3. Once it's how they like it, upon booting check the 'do not show again' option on the dialog box and click OK. You're done!
Troubleshooting: It doesn't sound like it's the case here, but one or two times I've run into badly made programs that required a Startup item AND also booted elsewhere. In that case it would toss up a cryptic error message about "XXX.dll failed to load," or something similar. In that case you can simply recheck the item it wants loaded. For those that don't know (sorry for being boring if you do), you access MSConfig in XP by Start-> Run -> msconfig-> OK. In Vista, enter msconfig into the 'Start Menu' search bar, and click the listed result. -
Charred -
Everything? Even the firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware? -
Telkwa, I think CharredPC had some hyperbolizing going on...but, you could remove everything from the startup, as they said, and the PC/notebook should work, just without the added functionality of whatever used to be in startup. hence, if you removed your security software, while you'd be exposed to malware attack, you would still work. or at least, work the first time you booted up after disabling
being this is my first laptop and having so much that is integrated, I don't want to go monkeying around without first being somewhat sure of myself, hence the multitude of questions. I need my back patted and my hand held for a lil bit LOL!!! -
*bump*
I'd still like to know what PLFSet.dll is...googling it pulls up stuff that doesn't tell me what it is. does anyone know??? -
