Im from malaysia where Acer is a pretty big laptop brand but from quite a lot of reviews people tend to say that acer is not as reliable as dell or HP. Can someone shed some light on this issue?

I give acer an 8/10 as far as build quality goes. I give them a 10/10 for price vs. performance (what you get for what you spend).

I'd rather call Acer a gamble: if the laptop comes with no issues, it's a great deal. If it has issues, it's a pain...

I had the same question before buying my Acer 5315. Lots of ppl were telling me that Acer sucked, that the built quality was low, that the used components were 2nd quality ones and that the assistence was crap (ok, that one is true :p)
I decided to take the risk and buy it, seeing that it was the only sub-500€ laptop i could get at the time (1 year ago) and so far i dont have nothing to point at it (apart from the crappy Celeron M540)
The built quality is quite good for the price (and i can garante you that i am not gentle with it), the performance was acceptable for the price (the bottleneck is the CPU and that can cheaply be replaced) and about the reliability....well, i am writting this reply on it so at least so far it lasted one year w/o any kind of problem.

I've been using mine to play WoW for the past three years with no problems. I'm only looking to upgrade now because it's a three year old laptop.

My 5684WLMi is going on for 2.5 years now...and it is from Acers "build quality issue" period.

Guess what? Zero issues of any kind up to now. Still a pleasure to use and own. As speedy as the day I purchased it. No regrets at all.

    Cheers

Acer quality tends to be pretty good, the one thing that stands out about acer notebooks above all other laptop makers are that they give u a 2 year warrenty standard, well they do here in the uk, not sure about anywhere else. but u tend to find if a notebook is going to cause u problems they do it within the first 2 years, usually around the 1 year and 3 month mark lol thats why u dont get 1 year as standard on other dealers (hp etc. . ) Dell is prob one of the worst i have ever been with, very bad customer service and will screw u over in a heart beat, as for acer, they tend to look after there customers!

I agree, acer quality has improved witht the gemstones. But even the older models were not all that bad. My 5672 was flawless for the 2+ years I had it, and the wife's 3680 is working perefectly since day one. You can't beat the value. The 3680 was so inexpensive, I could say, it is a disposable laptop! As for Dell, the business and XPS lines (and customer service) are great.

i can assure you that Acer gives the best bang for the buck. The newer models are far superior than ones that used to come five years back. Now its more stronger, got better quality stuff like graphics cards, processors and esp. the speakers are nearly comparable to those that come with Toshiba's and all. The best thing i like, as i already mentioned, you get a really competitive configuration for a really low price. And Acer's support is also kinda getting better now, i think i should say, its good.

p.s. i have been using Acer for 5 years now, been with three models and none of them have had a big problem till now... still running.. :p

When I was thinking of changing my Dell XPS, I was a bit dubious, I had heard stories of ACER laptops being poor quality. However, I bought a 32" HD LCD for my computer room which was ACER some time ago, and had been using that for a very long time, and I was really pleased with the quality.

The 8920 I ended up buying last year has been a solid, well built bit of kit, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one based on my experience with this model.

In the US they give you 1 year warranty (add 2 more for $99) or maybe it just my model 5315-2715. I say it is a good laptop I damage it and Acer repaired it. So I can't complain they have been good to me.

I have to agree Dell laptops are strange my friend formatted his and couldn't reinstall Vista. It install fine until the end when it was almost finished it would just reboot.

From what I was told it a issue with Dell laptops not sure how it was resolve. However a quick search on Google I found there a lots of people in the same boat.
