    Hi,

after seeing that most of the problems/questions for Acer have been solved on this forum, I decided that this will be the best place for an answer :)

I have an acer aspire laptop 3690. This is what CPU-Z says:

    chipset
    model: grapevine

    Intel i943/940GML rev 03

    southbridge 82801GHM (ICH7-M/U)

my CPU is an intel celeron M 1.6 ghz says "codename: Yonah"

I brought an Intel Core Duo T2050 CPU for my Aspire 3690. Although it has the same FSB Speed - 533 MHz like the old Intel Celeron M 420 and, as I read, the chipset should supports the PPGA478 socket, it does not work...

    Many thanks!

Open the back cover and look around the RAM bay for a label with numbers and check whether your chipset is i943 or 940.
If it's i943, you can upgrade to any core2duo socket M cpu like T5300, T5500,T5600, T7200 or core duo T2600.
EDIT: If it's 940GML, you can only upgrade to core solo cpu like T1350.

His last activity was about 2yrs ago, so I am not sure how you are going to get in touch, if I were you, I would get a cheaper T2300 or T2400 and try, if that doesn't work just sell it.

I upgraded my Intel Celeron M 420 to a Intel Core Solo T1350 and it works!
I'm very glad because the difference is huge.
Thank you both for your help.

hi, I realise this thread is old but I've been advised to upgrade my CPU and after using CPUZ, I can see that I have a Socket 479 mPGA and it has an i943 chipset so it's possible to upgrade to a core duo T2600 2.16Ghz.

I'm just wondering whether I need to update my BIOS before I replace the new CPU? I've read lots of horror stories about upgrading this but also seen that you will need to update in order to get a new CPU working

My current BIOS says: Version 3.50 dated 02/13.2007

I've checked the Acer website and there is an updated version, so should I install this?

No need to update the BIOS, if you are sure that your chipset is i943, T2600 will work.

Hi, it´s a pity that I didn´t find this forum sooner. I read another forums and took advice about a possible update.
The note about the chipset is very important. I have bought T2400 duo core, but it doesn´t work. Surely I have 940,
I am going to find out. Does someone know what all CPU´s are suitable for 940 chipset? Thanks.

Make sure of your chipset by checking the label under memory module (see attached snip)
Read the link I post as well:

Hi, thanks for your reply and the link. I checked my chipset and found out that I have 940 GML.
So I must buy a new CPU. I searched the Net and T1350 could be good if I found it. It seems
that this type wasn´t used in this area. Thanks again.
