    Hi there,

i have a poblem with my DVD ROM.
    Laptop: acer aspire 5100
    widows vista

when I power on the laptop the drive does spin up and you can hear it trying to read the CD/DVD. once the laptop is up the DVD icon is missing from "my computer and device manager" if you scan for hardware changes within device manager, it does not find it but again the drive will spin up.

Within regedit the upper and lower fillters have been removed previously.

The drive ejects ok and again when you close the door the drive spins up and tries to read the CD\DVD.

Also in the BIOS the drive does not appear.

I have removed all burning software to see if this would help!

This has been ongoing for several monts and occasionally it would restore itself but this hasn't happened for a while, i have an old Acer laptop and i have changed the drives over to see if it was the drive itself but it does the same with both of them, both of them work ok in my old laptop.

any answers will be gratfully tried out.

i have also tried the windows fix - did not fix!!

    Hi,

could you please try if you can boot from that drive? A linux live CD is preferred, but a Windows install disc should do also.
