There are drivers for the important stuff..like chipset, sound, video...but not for the fancy stuff(bluetooth, camera, keyboard etc..).

BigO I sent you the logo to gmail.

Don't put XP because you will have to back to Vista, there is no drivers for few important stuff. I called Acer and they said that 6920 don't support xp, so don't try

    RULES FOR UPGRADE CLUB

    1. Acer lies
    2. Acer lies about XP drivers
    3. Always use GOOGLE to search for your own drivers first...
    4. If GOOGLE fails you search NBR (see my sig)
    5. If that fails go to the manufacturer's site for drivers (intel, realtek, broadcom, atheros, laptopvideotogo, ect) drivers are there except for Cineadash or what ever they call it and all that Empowering Crap
    6. If you laptop says if can't see the HDD.. you need SATA drivers and Nlite.
    7. IF YOU HAVENT MADE YOUR RECOVERY DISKS DO THAT FIRST!!!

    We meet again atthegates.

If you recall helping me with the P223w monitor problem you will probably remember that I am not a technical genius.

That said I am leaning heavily towards installing a dual boot vista xp setup. Primarily because of repeated 'COM surrogate errors" "Rundll32 errors" and a persistent "nvddklm (or letters of that nature) error. All of these errors seem to have been ongoing for a very long time, with no real solution.

I have resorted to reinstalling using my recovery disk yesterday (of course I made them) and slowly testing my system to see where these errors begin occuring. Rundll32 is back already and i've only installed 2 things in addition to the windows security updates.

Dual boot looks like a decent solution about now.

If anyone finds a link to the SATA drivers required please post it here. I need them for the WDC WD3200BEVT-22ZCT0 hard drive. Manufacturer is unknown to me.

I believe I am almost ready to slipstream my xp installation disk using nlite and install xp on the D partition that comes with the laptop.

I hope you don't think i understand what i just wrote.

    =====================
    p.s.

I have just seen your post on another thread regarding the drivers and device manager. I have taken 3 images of my device manager. Now, what's the best way to get those images on here or to you?

HDD manufacturer is WESTERN DIGITAL CORP.. hence the WDC

the sata drivers you need are the same ones located in the SOULPASS link above in earlier posts....

just follow that guide and you should be fine

Thanks bigozone, I will have a read through that later.

I have uploaded 3 screenshots of my device manager to the members gallery if atthegates is still interested. I assume I will not be the last person to want to do this. I will be back with more questions and an update I am sure.

one last question for tonight, i am to exhausted after work to consider doing this today.

After a very brief scan the soulpass link says "Remember that these are specific to the Acer Aspire 5315." I am downloading that zip and will have a careful read tomorrow, but I can ignore that little caveat right?

the main reason for that link is to walk you through the process of creating an install CD with SATA drivers embedded by using NLITE....

the majority of those drivers are for the aspire 5315..
as for the SATA driver on that page... it should work with ALL NEWER INTEL chipsets,,, i945 and above for sure

the SOUND DRIVER should work but is not the newest www.realtek.com
the intel CHIPSET driver WILL WORK
the video driver WILL NOT WORK... www.laptopvideo2go.com (or togo.com)
the modem driver will probably work

you need to search for your own network and wifi drivers i haven't a clue what your hardware is.... just use google...

any driver from that pack that doesn't work should be easily un-installable

hope that clears some mystery up for you

    Hey @darkfng whats up?

Yeah dual-boot is the best option(for me at least).

Where you get this errors? In Vista? After a fresh recovery? Any new hardware installed on your laptop(beside the external monitor) ?

If you have Intel Chipset here you can get the driver(if you have second thoughts for the link in the 5315 guide although it's the same driver). But this is a setup package. If you want to slipstream the driver you have to unpack the setup(iata82_enu) first.
    1. Download the driver
    2. Copy the iata82_enu.exe to your C:\
    3. Go to: Start->Run-> type cmd then press 'Enter'
    4. Type :
    4.1) cd\ [press 'Enter']
    4.2) iata82_enu.exe -a -p C:\Intel [press 'Enter']

Done. The .exe is extracted in C:\Intel

Now you can slipstream the SATA Driver. nlite will aks you which driver to add. Select 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controler.

I assume you have 6920? OK there are XP drivers almost for everything. For example I can't find XP driver for cinedash(the fancy keyboard addon).

    Hey buddy,

Those errors were in Vista, I had one instance of rundll32 error today after last nights reinstall of using the recovery disk. Yes, this is the 6920. I did have my game crash on me earlier whilst trying to relax. That has given me the motivation to carry on through the tiredness and I have just installed XP on the D partition that came with the notebook.

All has been going well until now. Following the guide at soulpass I have successfully installed the Realtek audio driver and the Intel chipset that were contained in their zip.

The Intel graphics, and the Atheros Wireless won;t install (as BigO expected I believe)

Their broadcom ethernet manual install is over my head. It seems harder to install these drivers than it was to install xp on a partition!

I got version 169.09 from here http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers for my graphics but that doesn't seem to work.

Also the modem fix at the end of soulpass guide does not work for me.

Windows seems keen on the idea of looking for my drivers on the net, if I could get it to connect to the web I am very tempted to let it loose.

At present the device manager in xp does not see my nvidia card as far as i can tell.

    Any advice?

You don't have intel graphics so of course it won't install. 169.09 is the way to go but you have to install it MANUALLY. With the HAVE DISK method. Download 169.09 INF. Go to device manager, find display adapters, rightclick->properties. Go to Drivers->Update Driver. Don't let Windows to search the driver in Internet. Don't let Windows to install the driver automatically. Don't let Windows to search for the driver. Select Display Adapter if Windows ask you what device you want to install. When you're prompt to select a driver click HAVE DISK and select the INF you've downloaded. Done.
You have Intel wireless not Atheros so the drivers for Wireless Atheros won't work. You need atheros lan driver, not broadcom.

I'm sorry I don't have time to search for drivers right now, I'm having dinner with my wife and she's here for like 3 days so...If I get a chance, I'll try to find some drivers for you.

You sir are a gent. That has worked perfectly. I had spent n hour or so downloading Intel drivers and generally stumbling around the net.

I will look for the wireless and lan drivers, then i am planning on using the vistabootpro program to finalise the dual boot set up.

To be honest I think the xp will mainly be for games and the vista for work so right now i am fighting the urge to slap on SBK 08 and go for a spin on a bike.

Hope you had a good dinner with your wife.

Ok back with the wife :D

P.S. @darkfng you never told me if you have some new hardware or something, this rundll32 crush in Vista with fresh recovery reinstall bothers me. Maybe there is something wrong with your recovery CDs/partition, because is not normal.

Wow, you guys are full on. Thanks for the speedy replies.

Is it really 3 hours since I was daydreaming about installing a game? I have spent that regretting my decision to use the vistabootpro program to finalise my dual boot set up. It led me into the hell that is this thread

    http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/about92429-0-asc-0.html

whereupon i found myself searching for files that didn't exist and creating a boot.ini. I think you'll agree i'm not really qualified to do that! After 2 hours of that I ended up reinstalling xp, and adding the realtek, intel chipset and nvidia drivers in double quick time. After trying vistabootpro again i encountered the same problem as before (see thread from hell) but this time there was a boot.ini in my vista root drive which i was able to edit with the partition info i wrote down during the second xp install.

finally it seems i have a dual boot up system. i have booted between vista and xp a couple of times now.

so to your question about other drivers. using system information i can see that the modem tab is still empty. There are two problem devices ACPI\ITE\8707\5&9617a93&0 device type is not available. The other is a USB Device USB\\VID_138A&PID_001\5&2f704fc7&0&2.

I have a usb mouse and a usb flash drive plugged in.

Obviously i have installed the drivers that you kindly located. I will post a record of everything I have done to set this to work tomorrow, I have kept a record on my desktop.

I do wonder about Dual Boot. Can you point me to a sound user guide? I wonder about screwing up the files, can i use system restore in both OS? Basically I have kind of jumped in here without knowing the full implications.

    Thanks again guys.

    ps.

I had not added any hardware when i saw the rundl32 error, it was a hectic day at work and i cant even remember what is was doing at the time. I had got in the habit of clicking cancel. only saw it the once so far though. I had only installed SBK 08 game and DISKTRIX. To be honest SBK has been crashing since i installed it on vista, other games that had been going well seemed to crash increasingly. Disktrix is new for me. It could be their fault.

dual boot Vista and XP with Vista installed first
dual-boot Vista and XP with XP installed first

It's very easy to set up dual-boot, check these guides(Thanks to @CeeNote)

I think you can use system restore in both OS, no problem..

As for the drivers, I suppose one of them is Agere MODEM..and the other one I have no idea..
This is my final post for today going to bed :)

P.S. Awesome job on finding that drivers BigO, I really enjoy the cooperative job we're doing here :D.

Apologies in advance for the long post. Here’s what I did to create a dual boot vista xp on my Acer 6920G. I have made mistakes along the way and have two remaining issues

    1) audio is still not working.
    2) right clicking my Nvidia icon and clicking control panel does nothing. I can change the settings that appear on the right click.

I decided to try to set up a dual boot due to problems with games crashing in Vista, I had tuned down all graphics settings to lowest but still crashed. I have played a 30 minute test on XP with SBK 08 on max graphics with no problems. This alone is reason enough for me to set up the dual boot.

I didn’t follow them exactly but I found these guides to be useful:

    http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_...talled_first__the_stepbystep_guide.htm?page=1

    http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/about88231.html

I did follow the instructions here to create my slipstreamed xp installation disk.

    http://soulpass.com/2007/11/10/inst...essional-sp2-on-acer-aspire-5315-2153-laptop/

I used the Internet and CD burner Method.

I restarted with this cd and booted into the XP setup, told XP to install to the D drive, this partition came with the notebook.

I chose the option to format D at normal speed. It takes a while.

Ok, I am now proceeding to follow the instructions for installing the drivers found at soulpass.

The Realtek driver installed ok, I was promted to install a modem driver but cancelled that. Soulpass has separate instructions for the modem and advises doing it last. When installing these drivers I have been cancelling the option for windows to look on the internet for the modem device on high definition audio bus which has appeared occasionally.

    The Intel chipset installed ok.

I downloaded the 169.09 nvidia drivers and the inf file from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/xp.

I skipped installing the drivers for the modem, lan and ethernet.

I downloaded and installed .net framework 2 from microsoft.

I installed vistabootpro and followed the instructions from http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/about88231.html

Restarted and chose vista from the boot menu, it said it wanted to check the D drive for consistency I foolishly allowed it to. I believe it is currently wiping out all my hard work. After this had finished Vista was good but when trying to boot into xp i had an error saying no ntldr file. See this thread from hell http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/about92429-0-asc-0.html

I gave up with that and resinstalled Xp – wrote down all details about the 4 different partitions on the drive, their associated letters and the drive size. This is useful info.

Used quick format :) and reinstalled xp and the drivers as before. Used vistabootpro again and had same problem as before, unable to boot to xp as ntldr file was missing. This time edited the boot ini I found on vista c drive and moved all 3 files to xp d drive.

Restart and both boots available and working.

    Installed intel wifi driver
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...dc_wireless_xp

    Atheros AR8114 ethernet driver
    http://www.station-drivers.com/telec...ivers.com).exe

Installed the modem driver by following instructions here

    http://soulpass.com/2007/11/10/inst...essional-sp2-on-acer-aspire-5315-2153-laptop/

Audio was not working so I connected to the internet and told the Realtek audio device to auto update. It's still not working.

I followed the link to http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&OSFullName=Windows* XP Professional&lang=eng

and downloaded latest intel wifi drivers.

I will upload 3 screenshots of my xp device manager now.

Thanks for the help I have recieved here.

    ps.

Weird as hell brother, it was freaking me out. It does work now so i can't say it was all bad. But it was bad for a while.

Going to look at those realtek drivers now. Today is meant to be a relaxing day of racing, I have the graphics all i need is sound!

    For future dual-boot installation:

    Download and install EasyBCD

Follow the dual-boot guide(Vista installed first) page 4.

You said you have the RealTek driver installed?. Click on Start->Run, type dxdiag. Go to the 'Sound' tab. You should see the RealTek driver there. If YES click on 'Test Direct Sound', if NO your RealTek installation failed, reinstall....

I have just installed the realtek driver that you supplied. It works.

I seems that everything that I need works :) :)

I am off to relax with a superbike championship at max graphics with glorious sound. XP for gaming, Vista for work is what I am thinking.

Thanks again guys, will report back here if any problems arise.

Hope all this has helped the OP.

My dual boot is now complete as far as I can tell.
