My old Travelmate 2420 seems to suffer from overheating quite often so I would like to reapply thermal compound, can someone provide me with instructions on how to get to the CPU components? Is this laptop easy to take off?

Unfortunately, were not allowed to post exerts or links to the service guides as it's copyrighted material, but if you do a google search you should be able to find one quick enough.

Take a look at the pictures in this listing of a partially disassembled 2420
ACER TravelMate 2420 MOTHERBOARD MBTDJ01001 PM 1.73ghz | eBay
The heatsink is not visible, and all access doors have been removed... This means you'd have to disassemble the base unit completely and remove the motherboard in order to flip it over and repaste the heatsink.
Laptops are usually sandwich style, the motherboard is in between the palmrest and the bottom casing.
Probably not a good operation for a novice technician if you haven't done something like this before.
However - you may be able to clean out the dust much more easily. Just pop off the hinge cover and keyboard, then take a can of compressed air or simply blow into the vent on the side. As you can see, there is a big hole in the aluminum where the fan is. So once the dust is loose, shake it upside down gently or use a pair of tweezers or a paperclip to draw out most of the dust.
This could solve you overheating issues and save you a lot of time and frustration if you're not up to repasting task.
Good luck! -
I read the manual and it seems I pretty much have to completely disassemble it to get to the heat sink, however recently my laptop has been idling at close to 70C, so I decide to do it!
Good luck to me! LOL -
As long as you follow the guide pretty much as it says, and you are very careful with all the parts it should be ok. Nothing worse than being a bit gung ho with the parts then putting it back together and it's dead, did that once before and was not a nice experience!!!
how do I open Travelmate 2420
