    ^^

Is this a Synaptics pad by chance?

On my Vista Lappy tap-to-click is disabled via the Synaptics s/w (in a tab in mouse properties).

If a feature is greyed out it's likely the s/w thinks the feature is not installed or configured so as to not be available.

It's possible the current driver may be the issue. You might consider trying to find another driver. Just a thought.

Can we assume the touchpad "tap to click" feature did work previously?

No, sorry, I don't own Acer. But was postulating your symptoms seem to point to a driver issue or s/w app issue. Since the feature worked previously, it would seem you need another driver or device s/w app to get the feature to function.

I very highly doubt the tap-to-click feature would be a hdwr function.

The only other long shot I could see checking (just tossing out ideas) would be check out the OS Device Manager and your machine's BIOS for anything related to the touchpad in case something's disabled. I doubt it, but it's something left to check if you'd care to.

Good Luck. Sry I can't be of more help.
